The highest FIDE rated player U-12 is @Averin370, who's also a chess dot com member.

age 12: anywhere between 1300-1600.

Honestly, if you're above that, don't quit chess.

You're very good at it.

In accuracy, this is hard to answer. It sounds plausible to calculate, but it is far tougher in practice. Even the number of chess players in the world is highly debated; to specify an age (like 12) is even trickier. The odd thing with chess is the many false perceptions: like chess is only for "smart people" or GMs are old guys (a lot of GMs are perhaps in 20s through 40s, not old timers like in the movies). Chess takes many years to become really good at (usually), but the age of chess prodigies are getting younger. Some 12 year olds have more experience than senior citizens in chess!

I would compare your rating, in general, to everyone else (regardless of age) and then note: "oh by the way, I am also 12 and have years of improving/potential to show."

Even average ratings, for any level, are controversial. I think chess.com average rating is 1000 (Glicko, the improved version of elo), but primarily due to closed/abandoned accounts. If you want chess.com percentile, it is under your stats in your profile - but remember it is likely inflated for the reason mentioned above.

Calculating rating average for a specific age is ironically really difficult to accurately measure.

Personally, I would think an Elo rating of 1300-1400 or more is great for a 12 year old (Ok, yes, there are likely examples of 12 year old with higher ratings but) maybe more importantly for yourself would be whether or not you feel you're able to improve your enjoyment of the game and where you might go with it.  From personally experiences, I have come to realize that I can become quite proficient in many possible things when they become a focus of my attentions and desires.

Best wishes and great to hear you enjoy playing.

My pleasure and thank you also.  I admit this 'reply' wasn't really directed at anyone specific but more of just a desire to share a perspective of life that I have come across multiple times ... in fact, to be honest, I was even partly talking to myself but it is nice to hear you found something of interest in it as well happy.png

Best wishes "132J"

My pleasure also "132J" ... best wishes in whatever direction you desire to pursue and maybe that is to join some tournaments and become a 2200 Elo player staying at places with paid accommodations, free breakfasts and lunches along with a couple babe 'Chess fans' who enjoy hanging with you happy.png

... Oh, ok, sometimes I need to reign myself in a bit or my thoughts can get rather wild!!! 😆 =D

Have fun in all cases ... from my experiences it has been that the things that I truly have a desire for and when I focus on them and feel confident I can do them ... yes, they tend to happen (ok, there have been some sad and painful failures too, but still ...), good luck with your pursuits also happy.png

0 because a small margin of the worlds 12 year olds play on chess enough to have any sort of rating

I am a year under that, and I am 502 FIDE rated, and about 448 chess.com rated.

How come you persuaded FIDE to issue a 502 rating for you?

For everyone else, the FIDE rating starts at 1000... tongue.png

Any chance you are Geppetto's son?

The average 12 year old boy doesn't play over the board but has an online account and has played some blitz games on it. So the average 12 year old boy is not a very strong player, but the average rating of a kind who started playing over the board at a young age (say 5 years old), and has had regular chess coaching and practice, is going to be a pretty good player with a decent rating.

In any case don't get hung up on your rating, it's just a number in a database. Just keep playing and enjoying the game. Your rating will take care of itself over the long run.
