Is intelligence directly related towards skill in chess?

If you stare at something long enough, then you'll remember it. If you play any game for years and years, study the game, and think about it all the time, then you'll get pretty good at it. In my view, being good at chess is not what I would call an expression of intelligence. Probably more like an expression of one really enjoying that particular game

Well said!  yea after playing for nearly 3 years I finally know what the name of the opening I use is, lol Laughing

Oh Boy, my Hormons are suggesting to bang your Head with a heavy Book about gender essentialism...

Can't help it if you find it unwelcome - chess history confirms that there have been very few women able to mix it with men in top-flight chess, with only Judit Polgar able to go head-to-head with male GMs on any kind of regular basis, Vera Menchik habitually losing to men although she claimed the odd scalp, and the rest nowhere. As to why... well, that's been discussed at some length.

No, the only problem I see is "naturally less emotional". Every other word has my full approval. Just wanted to point out that explaining gender facts by "that is natural"-contentions is mostly thought to short. Sorry if that was not clear.

You're playing chess with your brains yes? And brains is "KIND OF RELATED" to intelligence. I would definetly say chess is DIRECTLY related to intelligence, however if it's "chess intelligence" or overall intelligence I don't know.

trysts

Just because you use your brain doesn't make what you do "intelligent"Laughing

It is interesting though, you would think that a woman by now would have surfaced capable of taking down any current Male Gm's.  Im almost certian they have the natural apptitude I could not fathom how not.  What is it about being the current relavant dominant GM?  What desire or need is required to push someone past the point Clarity and into the chess abyss to reach that Ultra Gm Status..

This endless BS conversation begins yet again??

Look.  USCF 1700 is about the 85th percentile of ACTIVE tournament players in the U.S.

The top 10 percent of players account for 50+ percent of all the rated games played. These are very, very, busy guys (and gals) playing chess.

You have to BEAT them in order to rise in the ratings.  And it only gets harder and harder every step of the way, BECAUSE all these players are DEVOTED and (basically) OBSESSED with the royal game.

It's an extremely competitive environment, intelligence notwithstanding.

Only 1 percent of active tournament players ever break USCF 2200, and these guy are (mostly) easy pickings for the the GM's.  Let alone the Super GMs.

Why are these simple facts so WTF-hard for people to understand??

What have (some of you) been smoking?  Smile

There are only a few human beings on earth who can win Judit or Hou in a chess game. Some men just are too emotional about this issueWink

Indeed, Judit Polgar drives the men crazy.

They just can't handle getting their butts whooped by a woman.  Laughing

I saw her "kick butt" in the New York Open, many years ago when she was a very young girl.  Priceless.

Oh boy, are we getting another gender debate up in here? Already? It was kinda amusing when it was once a month, but this is getting silly. Women have not seen as much success in chess because the game was too exclusive of females until quite recently. More GMs are males because they had a several hundred year lead in the metagame. Now please get back on topic folks or I'll have to QED with my flawless logic some more

learningthemoves

Yeah, let's not forget GM Yifan Hou who was very impressive at Tata Steel 2013 beating her fair share of top male GMs.

Funny thing is, this is a variation of the topic :-)

Explaining the reasons for why someone is beeing good at chess is an almost endless list. Gender is one of the things that should not pop up on that list, intelligence is one that should. But, it is of course not the only one like others said before.

chess to me is a way of keeping mentally fit, as in exercising the old grey matter,am into the 4th year of an science honours degree in sound engineering, if chess was really that related to intelligence/wisdom/common sence/ academia, then raising my elo by a 150 points would surely dictate ill get better marks when i had all my final submissions in,, but thats not the case, just like going to a gym to get physically fit, chess is like a gym for the brain, thats the way i see it

Even funnier!

The OP just joined the site, with a sexy photo, four new threads in one day, and a 2000+ blitz rating.  Go figure.

According to her profile, she has "a friend" (chess engine) that's pretty good at chess, "but not too sharp at other things," (both direct quotes).

The joke's on us, methinks.  Laughing
