How many IMs do you see hoping for stalemate down a queen? lol

All of them. But usually what happens is they will resign before they even try, realizing that such hope is extremely impractical.

Hehe... everybody complaining about 10 extra minutes in a year-long thread

I've only played a few games, so still I enjoy seeing it play out. I get annoyed if somebody resigns when there's a clear mate, because I don't get to do it... and if I'm losing but I think you might screw it up... hey, show me you won't!

You're at a level where you could still screw up badly. If you were 2000+ then yea understandable that's just childish.

I can't remember the last time a 2000+ player was in a completely lost ending/late middlegame without a massive time adv didn't resign against me. Very common to see 1800s not resign, but most, nearly all, 2000+ players won't play it out. I had an NM keep playing down an exchange and 2 pawns in an ending (2R 2P vs 1R 1N 1P) but I was down 1 second to 4 minutes in that game. Other than that, can't remember the last time.

I never resign against WeakChessPlayedSlow by SlowWeakChessPlayers or against SlowWeakChessPlayed by WeakSlowChessPlayers or against ChessPlayedSlownWeak by ChessPlayersWeaknSlow.

Problem is that they don't try to stalemate. That would be tolerable to some degree. Instead they simply refuse to move. How does one learn from an endgame that has no moves? It's only a lame excuse.

glamdring27

If they refuse to move they lose on time.  It's not like you're sat at a live board with nothing to do when playing on t'internet.

I don't resign. I want to learn from every loss. If my opponent can promptly end the game then I learn from that. What's frustrating is when the opponent is in a superior position but has to chase me all over the board.
glamdring27

Players at a lower level tend to just chase you around the board rather than looking for the fastest win, especially if it is a Blitz game.

Me too, Aussie....I just got a draw from a guy who was up a queen, a rook, and five pawns on me but he couldn't figure out how to checkmate me in time. I saved myself eight points.

I have no problem with that. Maybe he should learn some simple mating techniques.

I'm not saying I'm any good, I'm just saying I take points anywhere I can get them!!!!

^I think the 5 pawns may have helped you quite a lot, to be fair.

Cherub_Enjel

Actually, I just saw that game. You deserved the draw, since anyone who can't mate with that material and 20+ seconds on the clock doesn't deserve a win...

MickinMD

A guy I beat Easter Sunday in daily chess had been making me play out a won position, all the way to checkmate, for over a week.  I was anxious to see what the engines had to say about it, but I didn't mind otherwise: it was my opponent's right to hope I would blunder:

sanjay_katwal

i remember a game of bobby fischer when he gave up his queen and still won. so i usually don't give up ....at least i will learn something.

Redlynx17

I usually torture them slowly. For instance in an endgame - If I have 2 rooks, I will promote my pawn to a 3rd rook. If allowed, I'll keep pushing the other pawn for another piece. Most of them just resign hahahah and the ones who don't end up getting mated in the most embarrassing fashion.

Then I block these patzers so they don't waste my time in the future.

SonOfThunder2

By now it should be fairly obvious that stalemating doesn't happen often, but when it does one player stabs themselves and the other leaves jumping up and down...but I finally found the real reason why players don't resign......it's found in this song, Sound of Madness.

KholmovDM

Having played in 'the park' a bit in the last few weeks, I've noticed plenty of blitz players don't resign even after blundering a queen or blowing a position completely.  They play on to make sure that their opponent doesn't make any more mistakes (which sometimes they get overconfident and they do).  I saw a guy recently in a game act like he was owning the whole park, and he made a terrible move which lost instantly and he just got up and walked away. It happens.
