Looking at that sentence I am reminded of Michelangelo staring at a block of stone, trying to imagine the figure within, then chipping away until that figure is released.

Or something....

Yes, this is what I feared -- a resignation thread so poorly formulated that I wasn't even 100% it was actually a resignation thread.  I was ready to give you the benefit of the doubt, but now I'm afraid I'm going to have to call it:

Worst. Resignation. Thread. Ever.

The only good resignation thread is a dead resignation thread.

I ve been playing an online chess game with Knobb. His game has been totally dominating. He quickly establishhed a material and postion advantage early and when he captured my queen in exchange for his, I knew my game was defeated. Knobb's game does kick butt for sure! I offered him resignation and offered again when he continued to dominate and capture more of my men. He told me to "man up" and "fight till I die" etc... lol  What is wrong with quitting when you're getting ass kicked badly?? There is no shame in an honorable surrender and it is part of the game. Knobb...don't be so hardcore..!! It's just a game!

You ask your opponent if he/she wants  your resignation or does he/she want to continue and practice their endgame and force the mate///..It's ok to compliment your opponent's game too at that point..  it's a courtesy and a sign of good sportsmanship which seems to be a bit lacking in some of the people in chess.com...

Arnolio

PS Some of the most miserable murderers, jailbirds, and human failures are also great chess players, so it doesn't hold water that good chess players are necessarily more intelligent or beneficial to the world...just sayin'

It's a sign of a noob actually.  In fact, if anyone starts talking to you like this, first off it probably constitutes a draw offer in OTB chess and discussing it is an excellent way to get a draw out of a win.  You don't discuss ongoing games with anyone and especially not your opponent.  You say "Check", "Draw?", "J'Adoube", "Mate".

I believe it is also permitted to say "Your chair is on fire", "Help, I am having a heart attack" and "OMG!  Look at that UFO landing outside..."

Only permitted if you set the fire.

" "Help, I am having a heart attack"

Clearly constitutes a draw offer.

"OMG!  Look at that UFO landing outside..."

Gord, Klaatu barada nicto.

1) I believe FIDE imposes no such restrictions on arson reports.  Who can forget the legendary Capablanca-Alekhine match where Alekhine accidentally set his own chair on fire through careless smoking and Capa was decent enough to point this out, albeit while Alekhine's clock was ticking?

2) On heart attacks - culpability clearly rests with the opposing player for playing so aggressively.  Is it right to penalise the victim also?  No, but I would of course claim a victory on time as the ambulance crew dealt with him.  Nothing else would be moral.

3) It is Gort, not Gord. :p

Kent is in England, not the U.S. And you know how they butcher the English language over there.

--- Ivandh you wrote that awful awful statement 2 years ago and I'm shocked beyond belief  lol. I mean England is the home of Oxford-English which is the basis of this language. Now I will admit that in London's East End they do destroy the English language ( as shown in " My Fair Lady " ) but that is a minor detail. Without English we could not say very important things such as " To be or not to be that is the Question " etc etc.

Though some self proclaimed experts think its strictly against the rules to chat with opponents in chess and only "check" , "checkmate" etc are allowed, in a friendly game of chess (which is the only kind I play) it is perfectly allowable to chat with opponent as much as desired by each. At least that's what human beings do! If I wanted to play in cold stone silence, I would play against a computer or some other machine. Besides, Check, Checkmate, Resignation appear automatically when they happen and there is a CHAT BOX  I notice in every game with an option to turn off all chat to both opponents if desired, Duh! I suggest some or all of the following to these pedantic experts.

1) Stop pretending your experts about chess for everyone and stop making silly and actually rude observations..( I may play like  a noob, guys,, but you come across as total boobs..and not the good kind. lol)

2) While I applaud any attempts at humor, your attempts are even more lame than my chess game and seem more elitist and abusive than funny or clever. (burning chairs???)

3) If you indeed have a comedy writer who comes up with these lame interchanges that are supposed to be glib and witty..fire that person or at least put them on administrative leave for a loooong time!!

That about it for now..and I think I'm going to quit my game with Knobb cuz he is wiping up the board with my game and I can't ask for a second vacation when my position on the board is so desperate!!!! lol (Waves White flaggg!!) Your game rocks, Knobb!!

Arnolio

I'm just responding to what a few of you said. I can read English and if the shoe fits put it on! I'm not stupid. And neither are you. I'm just a good sport who likes to socialize and play chess on chess.com and not bound by rules that officials or official groups make up for me that I'm not even a part of... Maybe we should end this chat and play chess....??? Just a thought..

great reply dood.   there are many bullies on this site that talk mad $hip.  in my opinion they are all pu$$y cats.  the only problem is when you respond to such jerksmanship you are truly casting pearls before swine

Arnolio

Excuse me but the rules of sportsmanship are universal and not just for chess. I'm not making up rules, but you sure do appear to be. It's ok to chat during matches and no matter what you claim, all of my friends and associates do it, so please stop claiming you know the rules and nobody else does. I have been playing chess casually and for fun for years though my game isn't so great,, so I'm really not a "noob". If  you don't want to talk during a match, don't. But please don't tell the rest of us what to do.At least TRY to be a good sport and a little less of being such a stick in the mud...go play chess!

bigpoison

Gotta' agree with the 'vivre on this one.

When you're put out at first, don't step on the mound during your return trip to the dugout.  Tough to see how that one is universal.

TheGrobe

The rules of sportsmanship are obviously not universal, otherwise there wouldn't be countless overheated threads in which the finer points (and at times even the broad strokes) are debated ad nauseum.

artfizz

Could it be that the principles of sportsmanship are universal? e.g. don't kick a man when he's down.
