I still play decent normal chess though

"Four hawks" is an opening in which both sides develop both the hawks before moving another piece. Though I'm probably moving my queen next so it won't be a true "four hawks" opening, which is why I'm taking my time here.

Interesting concept. I'll have to watch this. Are there any other infinite plane chess games going on?

I don't think there's currently any other games going. The games can take a long time to complete. Optimistic is a couple of months, but it can be over a year. I don't think many people play it for that reason, but personally it's my favourtie variant.

Ok. I can't play with that time control, but I'll watch.

Why doesn’t each side play the king hawk to the center and the queen hawk in front of the guard? That would maximize flexibility

If you want to discuss openings (or any chess move) please don't do it during an active game. I think there's some discussion of opening strategy at this link (post #48 has a diagram with the hawks).
