The Evil Advisor Variant

I read about this online somewhere, I didn't invent it. And there are even two variants.

Here's the one we played today.

You need need people who know how to play chess somewhat. It is good if they aren't horrible, but they need to know how to move the pieces. These two are the Rulers. They make all the decisions and make all the moves.

Then you need to two who are better players. These are the Advisors. They tell the rulers what they could be doing.

But... You get a deck of cards, each advisor draws a card. If they draw a black card, they are playing to lose. If they draw a red card, they are playing to win. Ideally there would be a 5th person in the room to make sure you don't both draw red cards, that's boring.

One ruler will win the game, probably. Each Advisor can also win, if an Advisor draws a black card and their ruler loses, then they win. You can have as many a three winners and as few as one winner.

Strategy Tip: If you are playing to lose, you must give good advice so the ruler doesn't catch on, but give them bad advice at a crucial time.

It is a good silly way for chess nerds to not ignore the whole family during a holiday get-together.

“But Advisor, that move puts me in check!”

“Nah, it’s a sacrifice!”

“No it isn’t, bro. How are you 2200-rated?”

“Every grandmaster sacrifices their King nowadays.”

“So you’re gaslighting me now-“

“Hey, your clock is running out, make your darn move-“

”OH, YOU BE QUIET, YOU HAVE THE GOOD ADVISOR-“

“How did you know that I drew a red card?!”

”Because YOU, my friend, are actually COMPETENT!”

”And what are you trying to imply here?!”

”THAT YOU AREN’T, FOOL!”

”1V1 ME RIGHT NOW!”

”Guys, please stop. We don’t have time for this.“

“You wanna take this outside?!”

”YOU DON’T HAVE TIME FOR THI-“

*beep* *beep* *beep*

”Ah, looks like I timed out.”

”I HATE YOU SO MUCH!“

“AAAAAAAAA-“

In all seriousness though, good variant idea! It could definitely get people to socialize more. But if one advisor draws a red card and the other draws a black card, wouldn’t the player with the good advisor have a huge starting advantage, since their advisor is actually useful? At that point, it’d basically be a 3v1 against the player with the evil advisor.

The whole point isn't to necessarily win, but to have fun. There are really two options, the two chess nerds in a corner barely talking to each other, or 4 people laughing and giggling for half an hour...

Just like your dialog post above, that was great!

We didn't play with a clock, but that could have been even more fun, since you'd get the added pressure of a clock counting down...
