Bulldog chess (theory, comments, etc.)

btw, what is your profile pic? A rabbit? It has cute ears, but that still would not be right for the bulldog. The bulldog isn't a powerful piece so he doesn't have to look mean. But I don't want him to look like a bunny rabbit or a mouse.

it is a pokemon. for ears I recommend the bent ears that bulldogs have

The witch makes adjacent friendly pieces "transparent". I believe EvertVB thought of the witch, or at least helped specify the particular rules for how it's played.
Here is an example game: (game with witch)
Both sides got into risky positions, but couldn't find a way to both escape or force a checkmate, so the game ended in a draw. It's one of my favorite games I ever played - had strong tension in many positions.

"Ilikewindmills" posted some comments here, but evidently closed his account and now all his posts are deleted. He had an idea for an opening, and I told him we can even name it after him. I forgot what his plan was, and now his opening idea is lost.

Arjun: I just left comments about the ghoul here (bulldog-chess-with-zombie-and-ghoul).:
Smurfisme: That's good if ilikewindmills is back. Maybe he will visit again and play some games?

What are the rules on promotion in Bulldog Chess? Can pawns promote to any piece that was part of the army at the start (All pieces except bulldog and pawns)? In either case I think it should be specified in the rules since it is unclear if a pawn can promote to a Guard (or other pieces when other pieces is used). If for example a queen is not part of the starting position can pawns not promote to queens?

We've been playing with the normal assumption that pawns can promote to any of the normal chess pieces that are in the game's starting position (as in classical chess), so queen, rook, bishop, knight, and guard. But you made an interesting observation that promoting to guard has not been explicitly stated. I should probably add that as a note in the game rules. When the other promotion options are available, it's hard to imagine a situation where promoting to guard is "best" play. But you never know - I cannot foresee every possible game ending.
(I believe at least one version of bulldog has been played which did not have queens, and in this case the players made it clear promoting to queen is not allowed).

As a side note I played bulldog game without queens without knowing the promotion rules. Never got to the endgame though.

Yay! we have an opponent for @Junebug444! That fills up our bracket. I'll be online later today to update the bracket (here).

My idea was for the bulldog to be one of the key new pieces, but when evert and I first started playing, we added the witch, and removed the bulldog. They're a little redundant because they both have or give transparency.
Now the bulldog isn't used much anymore, but he is still the games's namesake. But he can still be used. I still like the classical version of the game - one game once went to more than 100 moves (but I lost).
The new key point of bulldog is that it has to be a game that computers can't play. Then players know for sure that nobody is using an opening book, or using an engine for analysis.
