I've seen an interesting variant called King Fortress. It's like 960 in that the pieces in the back row are randomly placed, but in King Fortress, the king is always in the lower right corner square and the other 7 pieces are at random, but the same for both players. The other difference is each player has 3 additional pawns, in the three rightmost squares of the third rank.
