Do you think that playing Chess 960 will help your regular game, hurt it, or have no effect?

WanderingWinder

It will definitely help because right now I'm way too reliant on my opening systems. Basically, it will help m strenghten my middlegame up quite a bit without actually having to go through the tedious work of learning a whole new set of openings to avoid getting swept off the board.

Playing Chess960 will help because you will reach endgames just the same as standard chess.  Developing your endgame skill is the best way to improve.  Playing Chess960 will allow you to work on endgames without worrying about reams of theory.

it probably wouldn't hurt though your openings might get rusty if you played it exculsively.

The study of openings in Chess 960 is in its infancy, but fundamental opening principles still apply, including: protect the king, control the central squares (directly or indirectly), and develop rapidly, starting with the less valuable pieces. Unprotected pawns may also need to be dealt with quickly. The majority of starting positions have unprotected pawns, and some starting positions have up to two that can be attacked on the first move.

So in my view, this variant of chess can enhance your thinking skills because in in this variant securing your king to a safe zone is quite a difficult task (as compared to standard chess).
