Go for substance – something that actually appeals to people and that they would like to be part of and participate actively in, when you have that things will start to move by themselves.
Multiple ads and invitations won't help if you don't have substance.

Invite people(friends), then once your club grows bigger the more people join

Try giving your club incentive for players to join. For example: my club, the "friends club" promotes members adding each other in order to reach 100 friends achievement with ease.
