Chien's tournaments have been great...very well run. I intend to donate a few $$ on a monthly basis to support his work.

Chien,

Many thanks for what you do. Your efficiency and friendliness in organising these tournaments is extraordinary good.

Best wishes

Chien's (@fhunfi) slow chess tournaments are well run, friendly, and once you start playing, you will keep playing :-)

Good variety (90+30, 60+30, 45+45) with rounds every 2 weeks to ease up on scheduling pressure.

I am grateful to Chien for organizing these matches. I am a lower rated player, but Chien kindly stepped up to play me. Unsurprisingly, he beat me pretty easily, but afterwards was very generous with his time and offered me some helpful insights into some of the problems with my game. Much appreciated.

Dear Chien,

I wish you and your family a great 2025. Thank you for all you do for chess and for improving players like me. You’re the best tournament director I've ever met and a fantastic coach.

Leviackerman594

i request you to make the tournament unrated

We just reach another milestone just before end of the year.

400 total members in the club!

20-25 pct of them are active members that join each regular classical tourney I organized.

Finding peers to practice serious chess with classical time control online is not too easy -

I accommodated it by founding 90m+30s club since April 2022.

Club history, current running tourneys and archive of all part tourney can be found here:

Our Club Motto

Chess can be such a challenging game to learn and grow in.
My approach is to inspire players to develop a lifelong love of the game.

I try to be as encouraging as possible for my members and students to try their best in every game
while being kind to themselves after the game
to balance the fighting mentality with a forgiving mentality.

Chess imitates life - loss tolerance is essential too.

Stanley Kubrick (famous America movie director that also an avid chess enthusiast)

once said a very insightful quote

“Chess teaches you how to control the excitement that you feel when you see something that looks very good. It teaches you to think before you act, and to think with the same objectivity when you are in trouble”.

Wishing you a Happy New Year 2025.

May all good things come on you in years ahead

I have played one 45+45 tournament organized by Chien, and currently playing 2 tournaments organized by Chien. He is always very devoted and passionate about chess tournaments with classical time control. I really appreciate his effort! Everything is very good organized and I really enjoy playing games here. Thank you Chien!

A Big Thank You to Mr. Chien (@fhunfi) and This Incredible Tournaments!I just wanted to take a moment to express my deep appreciation for the Classical Tournaments and the effort that Mr. Chien puts into running these events.

In an era where blitz and bullet dominate online chess, finding consistent, well-organized classical tournaments is a rare gem. Classical chess is the best time control for serious improvement, but opportunities to play it online are scarce, and over-the-board tournaments can be too expensive for many players. These events provides a high-quality, completely free platform for players like me who want to play long, thoughtful games and truly improve.

The format—where we schedule our own matches over a flexible 10 or 14-day period—is incredibly well-designed. It allows serious players to compete without the time constraints of traditional OTB events, making it one of the best platforms for dedicated chess improvers.

A huge thank you to Mr. Chien for their hard work in making this happen! This tournament series is doing immense service to the chess community, and I highly encourage anyone serious about their improvement to participate.

Looking forward to many more games and tournaments ahead! ♟🔥

@fhunfi! I have been participating in chess tournaments for many years and I must say that your work is exceptional. The tournaments are very well organized. Thanks Chien for your work and time.

Personally, I think that those who enjoy playing in Funfi's tournaments and can afford to do so, might consider paying voluntary club dues. I do. Let me explain why.

For many years, I've been paying something like $250 a year to keep in good standing as a member of a local OTB (over the board) chess club. Yet, I’ve played exactly one game there since March 2020, when the club temporarily closed for COVID. I also pay annual dues to the USCF, to remain in good standing with them, though I’ve played exactly one rated OTB game (the same game) since March 2020. In both instances, I feel supporting chess, at least to that extent, is something I should do if I can.

By comparison, I must be playing 40-50 games per year within this 90m+30s online club initiated by @fhunfi. If this online club did not exist, I’m not even sure what I’d do since,

a) I don’t think speed chess is really chess and in any event, I don’t enjoy it

and

b) there seem to be very few alternatives online clubs on this platform that use classic time controls.

I suppose I’d have to seriously consider again playing in my local OTB chess club, but there are reasons I now play exclusively on-line, chiefly including that I can play where and when I like, depending on my opponent’s situation. If I played at my local OTB club, I’d either have to give up weekends in the country or play right after work during the weekdays. The short of it is, I very much want this 90m+30s online club to succeed, as it obviously has succeeded.

So, I've been paying voluntary dues for some months now, via PayPal. Yet, very frankly, I feel that I’ve been getting a tremendous bargain, so much so that I really think that some of the other club members who regularly play in these tournaments and feel that they can afford to do so might also consider making monetary contributions of whatever amounts they feel comfortable with, either monthly or on occasion

The reality is that the club doesn’t run itself. @fhunfi runs it, at a great investment of his time, and with a great deal of effort and expertise. I, for one, do not want to lose the opportunity to play in the club's tournaments and feel that, for me at least, the payments are the least I can do in appreciation and that, in the end, they are actually in my own interest. Again, that's just my view, and it obviously depends on one's personal finances. But for those who feel the same way, it's something you may wish to consider.

I second everything that bshoot said. I have also started contributing $20 USD each month via PayPal. The Club 90/30 is worth every penny of that. I try to play in every tournament and get at least as much enjoyment from those games as my other games on Chess.com and Lichess combine...they both get$10/month from me. If you are able, you have to give back to the things you love or they will eventually disappear.

Thanks all for your kindly support thumbup

I started to run this 90m+30s online club on Apr 2022, at first so that I can regular classic game, as I often waited too long for finding classical game in Seek Board (eg. seek for minimum 45m+15s / 60m+10s that will consume maximum 2 hours and a little bit more if both sides use all their time) and often get paired with not serious opponent after all

So by running this online club I help myself while helping others. I started exclusively with 90m+30s time control that surprisingly has many serious and fanatic fans, then after a while I added 45m+45s popular time control tournament, and since few months ago I added one more with 60m+30s time control, all run in Swiss system.

Club history, current running tourneys and archive of all past tourney:

https://www.chess.com/blog/fhunfi/reasons-to-join-90m-30s-chess-com-online-chess-club

Since Apr 2022, there was not any single week paused for running tourneys, the club has become my babies that consume my time, focus & energy on daily base (at least as much as my regular main job as chess teacher onsite & online), but it is all done with fun & passion and I enjoy every minute of it.

3 ways to support me depends on your situation and your needs:

If you want to be in a slow chess tournament that is both serious and fun, then this club is for you! Winners are encouraged to be humble, and those that lose, graceful. What happens is some serious games between some nice people. What I like most about the slow tournaments is you don't have to travel a long way or spend a lot of money to participate like you often do in many OTB tournaments. Also, your opponents are usually friendly and are good sports. For me, this Classical chess club is like a gift. So, try it, you might really like it. happy.png
