2.5 million members

If someone would have told me when we started Chess.com that we would ever have 2.5 million registered members, I would have laughed a hearty, scoffing laugh.

But there you have it - 2.5 million members in 3.5 years time. Unbelievable!

Timotheous

Congratulations Erik and staff!!

In my opinion, it is due to a number of factors, but at least includes the following:

  • You have a personality that is welcoming; most of us (well ok at least me anyway) would have more of a temper and would have been very irritated with rude, ignorant complaints. You have been very tolerant and open to advice no matter how the advice came.
  • A combination of both wisdom in dealing with people and controversy, as well as the ability to attract top technical talent and people with great people skills such as Kohai.
  • Probably the best URL./chess.com ; I really wouldn't want to have to type in something else.
  • Persistence and I'm sure a lot of hard work and planning behind the scenes.
  • I have tried (unsuccessfully but oh well) to build my own business but after a few short months I am now back to looking for a job in the 'regular' job market.
  • Anyway, thanks for you and your staffs great work, I love the site!

Mahalo and congrats, having the an excellent interface with Facebook, is helpful as they have over 500 million members! Looking forward to additional upgrades! Great job by the way to staff and you!

How many of those are active members? In the stats I see no more than 0.5 million players? I have also played like 300 greeter games and maybe 2 in 100 actually went all the way. There is normally not above 4000 players live -

Congratulations!

I think it's surprising how quickly chess.com went from 1 million members to 2 million members. I remember there being something about guessing when the 1 millionth member would join and then when they did, before long chess.com suddenly had 2 million members!

Congratulations once again to Erik and staff!!!!

Yeah that's what I am talking about. This is a great site you have put together and I am loving every minute of it. Great site. Great job. Let's keep it going.  Cool

Congratulations!

I don't want to detract from the achievement in the least; but I do wonder how big the other chess websites are. Does anyone know?

I know that gameknot.com has just over 1 million members but I couldn't find the number of members for other big chess websites.

I would agree... lots of members on this site, but only a fraction of them are actually active... I played 30 greeter games and 3 games went 7 or more moves. (1 was fully played) But either way, I <3 CHESS.COM!

I can understand why this is site is growing so fast for chess lovers and I have only been a member since August, but Timotheous truly hit the nail on the head when he wrote: A combination of both wisdom in dealing with people and controversy, as well as the ability to attract top technical talent and people with great people skills such as Kohai.

I also agree with  KHOSROV about Facebook.

Congratulations Erik and staff!  To put it in chess terms, 2.5 million members in 3.5 years indicates you have played a great opening!  And now that you are in such a position, I would expect to see an aggressive middle game (which is already visible with upgrades to live chess; additions to all of the learning tools the site offers; great work by staff, etc.)!  Thank you for creating a fun and interesting site!  Smile

Cordially,

William

Great achievement. I think chess.com needs to attract more titled players though, because atm the majority play on ICC. Perhaps if chess.com offered to let titled players have premium features for free like the ICC do. That coupled with more investment in live chess and relay coverage would make chess.com the first choice for any player.

What I love about chess.com over all other chess sites, is it's interface and site layout, it's surprising how many other sites fail at this first hurdle. Not to mention all the training resources when you become a Diamond member. For £5/$8 a month, it is a true bargain.

Keep up the good work!

WOW, and it seems so normal and natural... :/ The other day I was thinking when (not if) are we going to reach 10 million...

Magic stuff, Erik. Congrats!

I've had 3+ very pleasant years here, met lots of great people, and am still enjoying chess.com as much as ever.

Many thanks.

I think that the #1 reason this happened so quickly is that chess.comhas te most free features of any chess website.
