Coincidence: I just posted in the openings forum about 100 topplayers who faced 1. c4 f5 2. Nf3 with black. No one (!) played 2. ...e5 and I wonder why.

Now I stumble over this topic of yours I remember your name was on that list of 100 topplayers and I can ask the question directly:

Spoelman- Pruijssers 2017 (0-1), did you consider 2. ...e5 and if not, why not?

Hello AttaChess68, that game brings me back. I did consider 2...e5, but then it makes more sense to play 1...e5 against 1.c4, with 2.Nc3 f5 as the most likely follow-up. The point of 1...f5 is to aim for a Dutch type of position.

currently, I am 2250 and struggling to break 2400-2500+. I want to break that level someday, but keep losing to twomovers, How do GMs and IMs train for the game? Clearly playing blitz 24/7 is useless, but how do titled players use their extreme amount of time to train for the gam?e

Hi GM Roeland! Which variant do you prefer? Freestyle Chess or No Castling Chess? And why?

He is a Freestyler trouble making as every new GM for sure. There are very few GM who respect the tradition of orthodox lines of play. There was no benefit or logic but they remained faithful of thinking without machines ritual

Hello, I have a question for you if you don't mind. Why is Nxd4 a bad move here? Against a Maroczy Bind, I thought you wanted to swap out pieces. Is it because it's worse that i activated the opponent's queen?
What imbalance should I keep into account in regards to this mistake?

Hey, thanks for this opportunity. I wanted ask about translating online play to OTB. I am around 2500+ blitz online, and have predominantly played online chess. While I have played OTB in the past to some degree, it's not really that substantial. In any case, I recently had an OTB tournament and I would say I underperformed relative to my online rating. I also realized that my calculation was more shallow and less efficient, while also being prone to more blunders and oversights. Do you have any tips on training specifically for OTB chess? I have heard tips such as setting up a board to solve exercises from a book, but I'm curious to know what you think. Appreciate your help!

Hello AAYN, The biggest difference is the timecontrol. Blitz is very much different from classical or rapid games over 15 minutes. With that it is very useful to solve difficult puzzles so that you learn how to find correct moves when you have more time on the clock. Apart from that the scene is of course quite different, so playing in venues and tournaments helps you get a feel for OTB games.

As you say, which is why I dislike Rapid being lumped together with Blitz, as was shown in the recent tournament where Gukesh was about 3 points ahead in the rapid but bottom in the blitz.

Not everyone can play blitz, and they should keep these time controls separate, and Gukesh should have got a prize for winning the rapid.
