There is a specific part of IQ that is relevant for chess. The part correlates with all the other parts. So if you have talent in chess, you most likely have an high IQ. But in rare cases you might have an average or even lower IQ and still be good at chess. Also, of course you can practice more to compensate a lack of talent.
