GB is just England, Scotland and Wales, and 3/4 of the country that is the UK ;)

Just to clarify for our American friends (I can see why it might be confusing):

"Great Britain" is a geographical term. It means the "Greatest" (ie largest in size, not highest in quality) of the British Isles. This is the island containing England, Scotland and Wales.

"The United Kingdom" is a political term, and the name of our country. In full it is "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland."

Not all citizens ok the UK understand this properly, so you shouldn't feel bad, Erik. Smile

Sorry Erik, that was not a pop at yourself.. but my flag isn't controversial, and if you look at any 'world' sport body, you will see it flying proudly. Examples -

http://www.uefa.com/footballeurope/countries/association=63/index.html

and

http://www.fifa.com/associations/association=nir/index.html

It is up to yourselves, but it really isn't a controversial flag.. just the flag that represents my country within the UK and the World.

Hi Erik, I have an idea. I see you had created a Game Showcase for those who want to show off the game they had won. That is cool, but have you though to have a form with both players display there game analysis giving there own commentaries together. One player may invite or ask the other to participate in this form. This will allow other to see the thought process of both players. Why one win and the other lose. I think this may be great, especially everyone giving there comments.

Oh, If you use this idea erik I want a  chess.com tee shirt Laughing

Unsure if anyone has already ask for this but, when looking for players the search sort by list has 'Top Rated - Alpha - and Random. To be able to search from the other way lowest rated upwards would be great for me. Can you Pretty please.

England/Wales/Scotland/Northern Ireland should not be listed indivually, but all under the Union Flag and under the title United Kingdom. America has many states but they do not all expect to have a flag for each state. So eirk put us all under one flag the union flag, and indivuals can state what part of the UNITED KINGDOM they are from on their profile. It will make it easier to find one our own countrymen to play, by looking through one section instead of four. So don't pander to them all, you have enough to do. One Kingdom, One flag.

Maybe this is the sort of thing the person who warned Erik of possible "controversy" was worried about. Although I regard myself as a UK citizen (that's what my passport says,) I consider myself English for sporting events where we have an English team playing. Let's respect LeviathanNI's (and indeed all chess.com members') right to represent himself as he chooses.

One Kingdom, One Love, 1.e4 Smile

Further to my previous post:

Erik,

Couldn't we have the option of selecting a "chess.com" flag to represent the online international chess community? I, for one, would play under that.

we COULD do that, but to be honest, i personally like knowing where people are from, what their names are, and how old they are. it gives a greater sense of community. on most sites you don't know anything about people and so what you get is people ACTING like nobody knows them (which usually means they act like jerks). so technically we can do that, but we wanted people to create more real identities.

thoughts?

Is there no way you could seperate the fields for "country of origin" and the flag under which people play? Personally, I make no secret of the fact I'm an (predominantly) English citizen of the UK, but think it would be a grand gesture to be able to declare one's ability to transcend notions such as nationality in favour of the notion of worldwide chess community.

People could play as an "international" and still declare where they came from in their profile.

I don't feel that strongly about this, I just don't really want to see any catfights over nationality on these forums. Too much patriotism leads to nationalism.

However, in deference to your wishes, I will now go and amend my profile to give a few more details about my "real" self.

Erik: there are quite a few people on this site whom don't use their real names(& locations-within a country)

What might be cool is the ability to save videos to like your favorites, so you just click "home" and watch them, like youtube.com.

Think this request 'to make this a better site' suggesttion got lost in the the talk about flags. When looking for members,  the search sort by list has 3 choice's Top Rated - Alpha - and Random.   To be able to search from the lowest rated upwards would be great for me.  Would this be possible erik?

I just have a few suggestions, and none of them are very big.  1 - put a link to the chess.com home page - not the "My Home" but a link that takes you to the page you get when you type in chess.com.   2. - When I looked at my stats, it says "Winning Streak:  games      Losing Streak:  games."  I thought it might just have been that I'd alternated winning and losing and never noticed it, but I looked at a few other people's stats and the same thing appeared.  Last and probably least, when I looked at the chess.com members ordered by country, I went into the US file, but would there be any way to order them by the city or state they live in so you could find people nearby to play against?

I have another suggestion.  I was reading your posts on spreading the word about chess.com and bendcat's suggestion about starting a business.  I think you should start out online first - start selling from the chess.com store instead of chesswholesale.com.  I don't think anyone would mind paying a few extra dollars if it supports this site.  When the online store gets going, set up a small store in a mall or something near where you live.  With any luck, you could start a moderately large business.

Would there be a way to be able to go into someone's profile and map where they are?  I know you can do this for clubs, but could you make it so you could do it for individual members?

Also, could you make it so that at least the group's admins can see a list of group members, besides those who are online, most active, or newest?

Thanks.

thanks for the suggestions :) we are not going to do a store except for our MEMBER store which sells Chess.com gear. we're going to focus on online tools!

the map will improve over time.

yes, we do need a way to view all group members.  you can do it now by getting on the MEMBERS page and just clicking on search with NOTHING in the search bar. but yes, we need to make that more obvious :)

I'm not sure if one already exists (in which case can you prod me in the right direction?) but is there a list of new updates anywhere? It would be nice to know what has changed each day?

:)

What I would really love to see is the multiplayer chess similar to the MSN games chess and the yahoo games chess. These are extremely fun, and MSN chess pairs you up automatically with someone who is close to the same rating as you. These are really great, I have a lot of fun with the java chess things. Another thing is multiplayer tournaments. I think this would be especially easy if the multiplayer was java.

It would be quite a big update, but I think it would be worth it Cool

Sometimes when I am going through making my moves I reach a game that I would like to give further study and it would be nice if I could click "skip this game for now."  I mean I know its not hard to go to my chessgames home and go to the next game but after I make a move it goes back to the game I wish to skip! :)

One thing that some other correspondence sites have is a display page of all your current games positions on little boards. I think this is a very nice feature because I can click on a potential opponents name and at a glance see their approx. playing style and sometimes its immediately apparent if they are over/underrated.

The ability for groups to play tournaments against each other would be cool.

Sorry if these suggestions are repeats.  Laughing I will try to make up for my noobishness by posting a link to this great site in my FICS fingernotes. Laughing
