i say yes, because i have found some members miss messages u send them they dont reply,a flashing thing at the bottom bar will do nicely :)
FEEDBACK: Should we add Chat / Instant Messenger on Chess.com?
the ads would be extremely annoying, like one of those that move along as you scroll up and down a page. but i'm a non-premium user, so if that helps increase revenues that would only be fair.

I don't think it's a good idea. I often use chess.com from inferior connections, and ugh... I can only imagine how much it would slow down my browsing.
Chess.com has done a great job of building a community, it's about more than just the games. But it is still not, and more importantly shouldn't be a social networking site. Put your IM/ICQ in your profile and voila! Don't force all members to use the bar.

Nice. I'm already have an (underutilized) Meebo account anyway, so why not? :)
Hey, if I can chat with my Yahoo (etc.) buddies via the plug-in, I can't help but wonder if it will be possible to chat with my chesscom buddies via Adium or Pidgin (like I can now with Facebook friends).. ?

it will NOT be optional for free member. that is part of the deal from meebo.
then i vote yes

NO.
As a free member, I would like to turn this thing off. If I would not have such an option, I would consider looking for a site with less annoying stuff.

I think it would be good. I already find myself going to google to chat with a chess.com friend that I am playing a game with because the chat window on the game page does not work well (slow to refresh).

a bar at the bottom wont be noticeable, plus u dont pay to be here so u cant complain, and u can leave chess.com but then u will be leaving the best chess site going
I think the existing messag esystem if fine--i am not a Yahoo,AIM or any other messege user so it is a function that is meaningless for me--I use this site to play chess and not as a social network

I understand that I have a limited right to complain as a non-paying member. But I think I have a right to express my opinion which I don't think I have alone. One of the best features of this site was that it was not overloaded with unnecessary stuff and I wish it remained as such. I come here to play chess, not to socialize and do not want anything slowing this site down.
However, I hope I will be able to block this feature with Noscript or similar FF plugins.

As long as its not taking up chess.com resources, and i believe thats what erik has said, then i have no problems with it. How exactly does it connect with Facebook and AIM?

Meebo is a service that consolidates your IM services and presents you with a single list of 'buddies' available via a variety of IM platforms. You will need to have a Meebo account (and give them your various IM account login info) to chat with anyone outside of your chesscom friends.

You know... thinking of the other guy (who might yet pay for a premium membership someday), I withdraw my vote. A. Basic members already get to look at plenty of ads & B. the only way for them to disable this online chat is to not have any "friends" in the first place.
Given that I've elsewhere requested the ability to hide my online status, I'd be a hypocrite not to empathize with that.

erik great job with the site it never stops getting better!!!!
i would really like to see that thing happening...it would be really nice

Would you really advocate a position that alienates members? In the long run that is foolish because if the pool of members shrinks...so does the revenue stream including funds collected for subscriptions and with it ad revenue since ad revenue is loosely based on audience.
Basic math - if Chess.com brings in less money, guess what happens to subscription rates?
I totally agree. If the site gets too annoying for the free members, it will have no new paying members. I doubt if there are many cases when a new site member purchased premium membership without being a free member for a while. I understand there have to be limitations for free members in order to provoke them to become paying, but new unwanted features would really encourage me (and I think some more free members) to look for another chess website instead of maybe becoming a premium member later.
lovely. yes for me too.
