SURVEY SUGGESTION:

How often do you participate in a chess.com survey?

Every time one appears

Occasionally

Never

Baseballfan wrote: There would be a bit of irony for anyone to answer "never" to that, would there not? :-)

Perhaps, but it would be a method of checking the validity of survey results. Could it go out on April 1st?

Very simply.

Those who truthfully (or untruthfully) answer: "No" - are either truthfully telling the truth - or lyingly lying.

If anyone answers: "Yes", they're lying!

Some of the new trophies are trickling through. If a few arrive each month, there will always be something fresh to look forward to. Well done, chess.com staff.

Artfizz, yes, I have added a few of the ideas here. I've been really busy with other stuff, so I don't have as much time as I would like for things like trophies, but I really appreicate all the ideas here, and I consult this page when ever I am making trophies.

SURVEY SUGGESTION

Playing against a similarly rated opponent: which of these scenarios represents the EARLIEST STAGE at which you would seriously consider resigning?

1: you are a couple of points behind, and your pieces are badly positioned

2: you are a rook down with no tricks left and it’s the endgame

3: you have just a king against your opponent’s Queen, Rook and pawns

4: never resign!

A trophy I wish I could've just given:

Pawnslaught.

/for when your opponent crushes you with an unrepentant wave of pawns. Just a though.

Regarding surveys, the only option currently available is a discrete, multiple-choice variable (radio buttons). Could support for numbers be added? This would be much more natural for surveys such as: How many chess.com groups do you belong to?

A further refinement would be to collect TWO items of information e.g.

In how many games have you RESIGNED?

  • None
  • Less than 5
  • Between 6 and 15
  • More than 15

WHAT is your rating?

  • less than 1000
  • 1001 - 1300
  • 1301 - 1600
  • 1601 - 1900
  • greater than 1900

This would enable some interesting correlations to be made.

I think this is an excellent idea, but the information needs to be available to all members, including free ones.  I could even suggest a further refinement that shows how many moves were in the average game that ended in resignation compared with checkmate.  If someone consistently loses by checkmate in 50 or 60 move games, and rarely or never resigns, then we will know to avoid this person unless we want a game that lasts for months.  That could be an added feature for the benefit of paying members, but all members should know how many games someone has lost by resignation and by checkmate.

The data proposed in this discussion is collected from SURVEYS of the general chess.com population. It will not provide identifiable data about any member - premium or otherwise. The results of surveys are published for every member to see.

However, onosson (http://www.chess.com/forum/view/general/resigned-game-stats) and rich (http://www.chess.com/forum/view/help-support/game-archive-idea) recently explored the idea that chess.com could start collecting individual resignation stats on everybody.
