High Rating adjustment points

My recent "daily" games are showing ratings in +/- 100s. It used to be +/- 10s.

I started playing 3 days games now. That's the only thing I could think of.

Is this a glitch in chess.com rating calculation? It's scary you can gain or lose a lot in ELO!

KeSetoKaiba

This is normal; rating fluctuates way more if you haven't played a chess game (for that time control) in the last 90 days.

Oh! But 3 days or 1 day it's all in daily type though. It'd probably make sense if I'm starting a new type. Not within daily?

KeSetoKaiba

You played blitz, but not the Daily Time control.

Your rating will fluctuate a lot if you are newer to Daily Chess, or haven't played recently (in 90 days?) but if you were to play blitz, then your rating won't fluctuate so much (maybe about +8 or -8), because you are "active" in that time control.

1 day or 3 day is all daily time control, but this is different from other time controls like bullet, blitz, or rapid.

So yeah exactly. So why is this happening now then? I've been playing "daily" time control every day and working my way up in ELO. When I started "daily" a month ago the +/- was high but then it was normal. Now suddenly it's high +/- again.

Read the hyperlink I sent; the rating change also depends on how confident chess.com is on your rating as well as your opponent's rating.

Ah! Thanks for the link! It's happening for all the games so I guess it is their confidence in my rating. I've been beating higher ELOs and get higher ELO in analysis as well. So I guess they are reanalyzing my ELO now. Thanks again!

I have the exact same problem as you, with rating adjustments as high as +-300 Elo. I find it strange that chess.com would be “reanalyzing” our Elo. Seems more like a glitch. I’m scared to make any moves now for fear that my rating will drop by hundreds! Does anyone else have this issue?

I know right? LOL. I'm now gonna be overthinking my every move. I was at peace!

I sent chess.com a bug report so hopefully this is fixed soon.

I'm not too mad. I've always wondered why my ELO is not high. My analysis puts me typically at 1400 in many games and I'm at 1100. So I guess they are giving a chance to go up. It's just the downside is scary. It'll take longer to work your way up if I end up losing these games!

JellybeanPotato

It is possible too that this is just a visual glitch… but I’m not going to try and find out lol

I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed this. Daily is the most common mode I play, and I've played probably close to 1000 daily games. The rating adjustments show that I set to lose over 400 rating points to a friend I play (rated 700) if I (near 1600) lose!

There appears to be a bug and I believe it is just impacting the estimated rating changes. The actual changes are done by different code when the game ends. I've mentioned it to staff based on a report in the Beta club.

My friend Paulie noticed it and his response was: `Satanic black magic - sick s**t'. He always overreacts.

same with me on Daily, massive increase in points given, taken and drawn, it has to be a glitch. Have reported it but a blanket message to all users would be reassuring. It started on 31.8.23 and have yet to complete a game to see if it is implemented or just a display problem as mentioned above.

Hey so I finished a game just now which showed +/- 150 points but ended up updating the actual points like +13 after I won the game. So looks like it's a bug in the display only and not the actual rating adjustment. Relieved.

i lose my first daily game and -121 daily elo

RajeshK22

I have played daily consistently therough the year and my rating adjustements are crazy. ex: against a 1510 ELO while I'm 1435, they read Win +185 Loss -141 Draw +22...

last game I won (same format, same daily tournament) againt a 1795 ELO (very proud), I won 16 ELO pts only...

Last exemple: I'm currently playing a 900 ELO in the second round of a Ruy Lopez tournament. he is doing pretty well so probably underrated. Should he defeat me, I'll lose 354 ELO points !
