How much do Grand Masters make per year. How much to INGM make in comparison to regular GMs. Also is it more profitable to teach chess or to be active in Large tournaments?

To be active in Large tournaments is profitable only if the player is good enough to win some of them.

This tournaments demand some travels and other costs that can be paid by a sponsor. But, again, it is very unlikely someone would get a sponsor without being good enough.

Many sports have a large public that pays to watch games, buy jerseys and other stuff. So the athlets are well payed. Chess has a small public that would do similar things.

I just don't get it. All the dumb sports like, football, basketball, baseball pays crazy money. Intellectual sports like chess, you spent 10, 20 years or so studying and once you get there (GM.) It pays peanuts !

Like go figure !

I explained this 3 years ago! Chess has not much comercial value. It is not a good game for TV transmission. Much of the time is spent by players thinking and the action is very difficult to follow if you are not a reasonable player. Besides, many people preffer reproducing and studing the chess games than watching them live on TV.

Football can be enjoyed by millions of people that can't play it well. This doesn't happen with chess.

Also, there are not many exclusive products to sell to the fans besides of books. Huge Football teams like FC Barcelona and Bayern Müchen can charge millions for the use of their brands in several products all over the world. They sell jerseys and gain money buy selling their TV transmission rights, wich, as I alreay said, is not something that profitable in chess.

Chess players aren't as well payed as Football players because they just don't generate the same amount of money to sponsors and media. Simple like that.

they quit chess because they finally realized there is no money in it

Top 10 players are millionaires.  but they probably got good really young and had financial support.

they say people ranked top 100 to 11th can make 100,000 a year.  but it is really tough.  they have to get a sponsor or they make a lot of lessons.

but even being a successful coach is tough too.  GMs charge $80 an hour for lessons.  who has that kind of money?  so it is not like they are making it.

everyone else is trying to scrape by with a liviing which i think is probably 20,000 dollars per year.  you can make more money with another profession.

Even if they make $100,000 a year, you have to subtract the value of all the sacrifices they make.

I hear there is a GM playing in Central Park, NYC, who may win upwards of 100 USD per day on games and another 100 USD teaching lessons.

Not a bad living but real estate in NYC is costly.

Chess is a great game, but a lousy profession.

2700+ super grandmasters can live well from it.
2600+ grandmasters can earn their living
2500+ grandmasters must scrape to make ends meet
All the rest pays more than they get out of it.

On the other hand, money is not everything.
It is great to spend time on your hobby and even get paid for it, albeit little.

If believe in the USA... if you are a IM or GM and qualify for the prestigious inventational uber international events to include the Chess Olympics (representing the USA.. ) They can apply for a federal grant... much the same as an amatuer Olympian representing the USA... it's not much... little more that what you would make working at a fast food resurant.

It would be great if some of these super wealthy people in the world would fund tournaments out of the goodness of their hearts or maybe sponsor the up-and-coming talent. Plus it would be great if the media spent at least a little air time on showing intellectual pursuits, instead of physical sports...
