Are there any lessons here in CC sbout how to formulate a plan and what to do in the middlegame? I believe this is by far my bigget weakness, in a litany of may weaknesses at my rating level. Any help with this would be appreciated.

chess.com has a ton of lessons, but most of them are under the diamond membership only.

If you were like 1500 or 1600+ rating, then I'd recommend IM Jeremy Silman's book, How To Reassess Your Chess 4th Edition. It's a really advanced book though; quality, but good. It's something like 500 pages.

For free, you could check out my YouTube channel Here's a video I made a long ago which could help:

This video is also good for you.

Silman’s The Amateurs Mind is a less advanced version of Reassess. It, too, is very good.

Try Chernev’s book, The Most Instructive Games of Chess Ever Played.

Hou could also try watching videos of major tournaments. The commentators discuss the players’ developing plans.

@Whiskey_Daddo55 your biggest weakness is that the basics are not working for you. You should work on tactics or calculation much more than anything else

One thing that made at least some difference, for me, was to stop obsessing about the piece count, just trying to get to the end game in decent shape, and going on the attack:

- the best defense is a good offense

- a poor plan is better than none
