In Vote Chess we should be able to see the tally before we vote ourselves

MM78 Yes, I think that's the advantage of vote games between small groups. It's worked out well with Chess Team International. Most of the time we get good discussions and most of the time everyone holds their vote until it's been discussed although there's always someone who still votes prematurely--oh well. I like the vote games best of all because of the discussions as you play. I'd like to see the votes before I vote especially since if the vote is premature or for a poorly conceived move, the rest of us can rally to fix it--ie message all voters who may not have voted. In a small group with a good discussion the actual vote is less relevant as the discussion is everything. Monitoring the vote is most useful to protect against bad votes.

"No, you can not see the votes before you have cast your own vote. That was my point. You should be able to. As for the need... well a simple example (remember, most teams don't have discussions like we do and even if they did many vote before any discussion anyway):

Move a) winning, but difficult to see the whole line
Move b) pretty good, but not winning
Move c) looks good superficially but does in fact leads to a loss

Suppose the score is 10 votes for c, 10 votes for b and 2 votes for a with 23 players in the team. If I knew that I wouldn't vote for move a, I would tip the balance to get move b played rather than move c."

Yes, but i believe that it would be better to have your players post the best moves so that you can play a rather than b.

I say we take a vote on this.

good point:

Let me post the tally so far...

Pushed off a cliff  36%

Boiled in oil  23%

Hung, drawn and quartered 16%

Made to listen to Celine Dion forever 11%

Forced to read "Is it bad manners to not resign?" threads all day   14%

RESIGN! 2%

clearly arguments on both sides, which is why it is an option. on the upcoming game vs. GM Becerra we will show the list.

Yeh, I'm also finished playing in the big public vote games now that I've discovered vote chess at the group level. There's no drive by voting and fewer ugly dissagreements. And I'll bet the loser will resign sooner although I haven't as yet completed any group vote games to validate that theory. But I find it hard to hold my vote and then remember to vote before the time limit expires. I mean let's face it, I have other issues in life besides waiting to vote until the very last minute. That's why I think voting with the option to change my vote is best. Along with being able to see how the rest of the team is thinking. That's how it is when I'm playing a regular game. I can change my mind as often as I want until the time expires.

I think showing the vote list is a strong move, but I'll hold off until I see what everyone else thinks first.

after i voted! yes, then i'd want to see the count! not before.

VuduChile

sometimes i wanna see, other times its not an issueUndecided.

i'm sometimes taken aback at how far some games go down changed lines while i was away; then i have to search the comment archive and i wanna see the bias cause its the only way to competently join in, cause some comments are not very explicit.

this waiting 'til the last minute sounds too much like planning your life around vote chessYell

Any thoughts on the idea of optionally being able to set up a voting moratorium at the beginning of each move to encourage discussion first?

I think it is very useful to see a tally of votes before you vote.

A tally will allow players to see the action so far so he or she can cast a wise vote. Ideally, the better players will vote first, and explain why they want to make a certain move, and other players can get behind their logic. It's better than just everyone choosing something random.

Well if I know I'm gonna be online anyway with a few hours to spare.  It's not like I won't go out so I can get my vote in just in time. Laughing
