Is it Cooler Outside? Anyone else getting fed up?

I know we have no need to take any of this seriously. However, we have a person whose avowed aim is to educate us forum dwellers. Trouble is, it's hard to think of any other teacher who would be the most people's very last choice for the position.

This thread probably won't last long. The last one, on the subject of "are chess players athletes?" was locked and not before time, because it became a series of personal attacks and disconnected, meaningless comments. This comment was next to last and I think it deserves a polite reply.

I think there are, and the Oxford English Dictionary includes, several definitions of sport in common usage even today. I also think the OED is not wholly up-to-date on the ways usage sometimes embraces certain games like chess. That’s where our disagreement lies.

Mostly, I think, you and I agree on some basic terms and how they should be applied. I’m also leery of calling speed chess athletic, at least when played online. On a physical board with clocks, however, the amount of movement increases somewhat. It also takes a great deal of finesse combined with speed to play within the rules: if your chess pieces are not standing after you release them, you are not allowed to press the clock.

Again you people show you don't understand the definition of athletic.  Having fast reflexes in speed chess does not mean strength and agility.   It also doesn't mean stamina.   All three are what define athletic.     Reflexes are simply an example of  exercised skill many of you claim you dont' understand the meaning of. But it has nothing to do with athleticism,  which according to most definitions is not a requirement of an athlete or sport.   Again,  Nervesofbutter posting the definition from merriam webster as an example.  Oxford is another one.

Again you show your ignorance, by referring to "the definition" of a word. Words usually have a range of meanings and not understanding that makes you unfit to discuss anything here, beyond what you like to eat.

"No bud,  not understanding the words IN the definitions is what is YOUR problem.  And that makes you unfit to discuss them lol.  WHen we refer to oxford or merriam webster, or cambridge,  you must refer to those defintions and show you understand them,  and if so explain why they do or don't apply or why you disagree with them.  Otherwise you are having a dishonest and disingenuous discussion.

I adhere to those definitions which chess suffices,  and then give my own further personal criteria and explain the reasons why.  Something you are unable to do."

I don't really know what most of that means or what it's relevant to but since I have, several times, explained what I think relevant words mean, why they mean what I think they mean or maybe why they have a range of meanings, there couldn't be a stronger admission, from the person concerned, that he doesn't take a blind bit of notice of what others post but always claims he knows best. I'm far from being the only person to have commented in such a way. Therefore, he perhaps should be asking himself whether he is honest enough to discuss anything, or whether he will bring any conversation into disrepute, with the constant stream of mindless attacks, on anyone who criticises.

There are less people posting on the forums. I wonder why.

Well, let's see.

I too have noticed a decrease in the number of forum posters.

Forums and clubs that were previously active seem to be dying. Perhaps because lockdown is finally over...

Partly that fact that it's holiday time but if this talking were enjoyable, many would still talk. Then again, when some people leave that are liked by others, that will influence things too. But I can't help but wonder if it's also linked to the trolls.

That wasn't the reason Stumpy locked it. He locked it because "this has gone out of topic and the discussion has gone".

Now I'm not saying there wasn't alcohol involved, but that wasn't his normal, coherent self. Not to mention every post prior was exactly on topic. He should have just said the real reason he wanted to lock it, saying it was "out of topic" almost makes me think Coolout typed it.

Alcohol at 10 am in the Principality of Wales doesn't seem likely to me but then, it's been a while. At one time, we went nearly every third weekend but the roads got full of traffic in the mid 1990s. Christine was stung by a weaver fish, on the beach at Aberdaron. The nearest doctor was somewhere in Anglesey and I had to treat her, talking to him on the pub's landline. That's where we used to stay when we were there.

Unsure why but this seems to belong here

Almost every large thread in the general chess discussion has him in it!

Well said @Optimissed and @IfPatriotGames. The closure of the previous thread, after over 2,100 posts seemed an odd and poorly timed event. The thread had run off into the ditch long ago with personal attacks by only a few. The OP here and others tried to steer the discussion through intellectually honest debate. It’s unfortunate that the forum has become hijacked by attention seekers and simple minded argumentative individuals. Alas, as @NervesofButter has repeatedly reminded us all, this is the state of internet reality. Chess.com has no immunity from such boorish behaviors.

Sorry I cannot read the post. Because on phone half the quote is in white with white text. Also it is kinda massive in size of text. So in short if anyone want to fill me in with what this post or topic is about?

if this is about a person I am not so much for attacking one person even if I may disslike the person or the way someone handle a discussion.

My hope is that the mods should handle the forum if someone attacks others or cannot handle a discussion on a civil level.

As one of the members who was frequently communicating in that forum I don’t agree with the decision to lock the thread. I think members that are attacking other posters can be muted or blocked from the thread without the need for others to also be taken away from the discussion. I personally think the discussion would have been very interesting if there was an absence of users who talk there solely to create an uproar and enjoy feelings of superiority.

It appears some people are always right, aren’t they?

Its ran to its logical conclusion.

1. Start a post about something....anything.

2. People give an opinion.

3. People start to argue over others opinions.

4. People attack others.

5. Post gain popularity so trolls show up.

6. Trolls are fed the attention they crave.

7. Attacks intensify.

8. Post gets locked.

9. Someone will start another post on the same subject.

10. Wash, Rinse, Repeat.

Step 3 is the critical step. It's okay to argue, even if you are arguing opinions, but you can't get personal; and you have to recognize that since you are arguing opinions, the argument can't be won.

At some point you have to stop arguing and respect the other persons position.

Meh, he didn't really try to educate anybody. After all, that would entail some real explanation and hand holding while taking your with even the slowest students in the class. Can't remember any school were teacher just went "You're too stupid and you're too stupid and you and you and you...". So this was more him preaching his view of the world and chess, and it was an interesting take on chess at least.

I wasn't participating in that topic, but I noticed the reason for locking was strange... also the poor English as you pointed out.

IDK... maybe it's part of the larger move towards inane children. Maybe they want the types of mods to reflect the new type of users tongue.png

Sure, nothing meaningful was being said (I assume)

But it's the same for all the most popular topics on chess.com.

Maybe they only tolerate popular topics if the posts are 1-10 words long. Kids don't like reading whole paragraphs these days. Additional points off if you type in full sentences with proper grammar.

If we are going to go by the "...nothing meaningful was being said..." parameter.  Then why does the site allow all the useless posts like counting threads, add a word, remove a word, create a story by adding a word, "Lets make the longest posts ever." "Be post number 1000 and get 100 trophies."

As someone said earlier.  Let the topic stay open but ban the members that do not contribute to the post.

Exactly. They let the most meaningless topics stay... maybe they want more dumb kid and less adults who type in full sentences.

And you know, it's 2022. The young mods are the cell phone generation. They might have a bias against literate people. If you don't think counting to 100 is interesting discussion they might be out to get you shock
