Why would you have to give your credit card number for the 7-day trial if you are not paying for it?

"We require a payment method when starting a free trial to confirm that a real person is behind the account and to prevent the misuse of multiple free trials. Here’s what you should keep in mind:
- If you cancel the free trial before it ends, you won’t be charged.
- If you forget to cancel, there’s still a 30-day money-back guarantee for first-time buyers, giving you plenty of time to decide if premium is right for you.
-Even if you cancel the trial and later decide to purchase a membership, you will still be eligible for the 30-day money-back guarantee!
If you're ready to give it a try, you can sign up for the trial by visiting the membership page and clicking 'Try Plan:'"

If you get a title - NM or above - then you get free diamond membership for life. That might not help you much right now, but it's a nice goal to work towards.

This is one way.

Chesscom staff and volunteers also receive free diamond membership for life.

Outstanding community members, in the forms mostly, can be nominated for 1 month of free diamond membership.

Winners of chesscom events or predictions can win, based on what I have seen, up to 6 months of diamond.

You can sign up for a free trial, and cancel before the renewal date. This is the only way that requires a valid credit or debit card. Do not send this to anyone through messages, even if they claim to be staff.

Another way is to join groups and clubs that do giveaways based on tournament preference or random drawings.

Good luck ❤️

I don't see the reason behind why they lock a lot of things behind memberships other than money. I am not saying that they should not try to earn money from this website but it feels kind of weird to me that Chess.com says people that uses game review frequently can improve their games 2.7 times faster but also says that you are only able to use game review by getting a platinum or better membership which grants you unlimited game reviews. I know you can get a 7-day free trial for any membership you want but if you don't have any money after that, you're back to being restricted to 1 game review per day and access to only a limited amount of bots you can face against. It feels to me-even if it does not feel to you, that you need to cough up your money to have a smoother way to achieving mastery in chess through chess.com. The point that I am trying to make is that you are restricted through multiple ways if you don't have a membership.

It costs money to run servers, pay for bandwidth, pay employees that create the features and content, to host events, etc

And sometimes, just ads can't cover all of that.

My understanding is that ad revenue helps but isn't close to covering costs
