Ok, fair enuf, they may not be able to  support the bandwidth to post new images.

But the problem probably is that, if they buy into "cloud supported" images, it's really difficult to separate the pre V3 images from those posted after.

I have faith that Chess.com is capaple of writing code that is capable of that task.

Erik doesn't need defending from me, (and probably doesn't want any), but 10 million members will slowly become 20 million ya know ??

sleepingbeauty

but most of those 10 million accounts are probably largely inactive. If i were you Eric. i would give an account 6 months. if it has been inactive for that long it should be deleted.

Not only that, but i would start segregating your mailing list into more profitable niches that woud increase your cash flow so running this site wouldnt feel like such an expense. i totally understand why you feel the need to streamline

Syd_Arthur

Chess.com would not delete paying accounts, regardless of activity.

Syd_Arthur

That would be up to the account holder.

sleepingbeauty

i agree, syd .. im talking about the free ones. Membership accounts are different. Im certain there is a pletora of free accounts that have been inactive for a long time.

Syd_Arthur

True, sleeping-beauty, those accounts, if deleted, would theoretically save a ton bandwidth.

sleepingbeauty

i think its something to seriously consider. for example i left for a bit and opened a new account. when i sign in here. my old account is stil attached and pops up when i go here then it says account closed and i sign into this one. all those flaws would free up a lot of space.

Syd_Arthur

It must take a lot of space to hold those inactive accounts with a game archive, etc.

Let's say, an average inactive account has 1000 games.

Does that mean that every move of every game has to be maintaned in the database?

And yeah, they say that you can't look back that far if you're not premium, but if one becomes premium, suddenly all those games become viewable, indicating that they are in storage, occupying bandwidth.

Syd_Arthur

But are already posted images ocupying "bandwidth" or "storge space"?

Because, from my limited understanding, that seems to be the issue as far as image posting on the forums is concerned.

sleepingbeauty

a sites bandwidth has to do with what  data you guys can view over time and at what speed.

storage has to do with how much content can be stored on their servers. which in this case i thought was part of the problem
