Making chess not just a game but a culture of class

With the growing interest in chess worldwide as a result of online gaming, I believe chess players should take this opportunity to develop a culture of class and appropriate behavior online. So that when you introduce yourself as a chess player, you are regarded as someone with a nice behavior in our society, either online or in person.

What do you think? Is this possible?

Appropriate behavior online? That is never going to happen. People are too immature for that to happen. There will always be trolls in any community online to spoil it.

In my experience, there are plenty of d-bags at OTB tourneys too. Some of these guys at "master" level that live chess just need to chill it out a bit.

So basically, you want everybody to agree with you that chess players are better than other people?

not necessarily better but just a person with appropriate behavior or character because if a majority of players online cultivate in themselves a behavior or character or culture of being classy, this could be contagious, especially when players are concscious or aware of this change being promoted. The next player who will register online to play chess would know already that chess players maintain also some standards in character and thry are expected to measure up to these standards.

I think wider anything branches out, the more likly it is to get 'undesireables'.

so, how will this information spread?  will there be some other place on the internet where things are posted like "those chess players sure are a classy bunch" or "check out chess.com, the only troll free forum on the internet".

ok, so as for looking in, i am pretty sure you wouldn't think that i live up to your standards.  and i am ok with that.  i think lacking a little class adds a bit of fun.

I am not sure that this is what you are supposed to say here, trystie. You are expected to exhibit the culture of class, or pretend as best as you can.

That's what I was doingCry

Perhaps we need a few articles on being classy and a gentleman/gentlewoman!

This is a pretty good post despite the author being completely out of touch with reality.  Could someone spare me the trouble of telling him that most chess players are not tall, dark, handsome knights of chivalry who guard their royal estates?  That the majority now come in two types: either they are grossly overweight, middle-aged, white men like me, or else they're young Asian kids who play miraculously fast.  While I'm sure he means well, chess is a game for misfits, and social cripples.  It's for people who hate life and are miserable.  It is not the place to hang around if you're looking for respect and dignity.

Stated frankly,

They are not :(
