Meebo is really really obnoxious

Hello Readers,

Maybe its just me, but I find meebo to really really obnoxious.  I don't IM, and I don't text.  I am not interested in paying for acticles, correspondence chess and a tactics server, which are about the only things I use here.  Expecially when all I would be paying for is to remove the annoying meebo toolbar.    I can play correspondence chess elsewhere.  There are other free tactics servers (I get more out of books anyway).  And there are more chess articles on chess on the internet then I could ever have time to read (I get more out of books anyway).  Up to this point, I really liked chess.com because of how it combined all these things.  Now with this meebo toobar issue, I am considering deleting my account.  Is anyone else this annoyed about this? Or is it just me?

Set it so it only shows on your homepage. Quick fix. It then won't show up on Onlince chess, Tactics Trainer, or articles.

How ironic it is that I talked about the search function in the other thread...

I actually use the search function a lot, maybe I'm just retarded at finding stuff...

Apoapsis

Well, it must not use much bandwidth then...

meebo doesn't steal your password :)

you can easily block or restrict the meebo widget if you don't like it. go to your account -> privacy and restrict it to your homepage. very easy. or use ad-block to remove it.

it's fine if people don't like it. but to be so upset about it when it's easy to fix, that is what i don't understand...

I don't want an either or delete, or restriction, I don't want to see this ever at all. It is only another useless layer to the already message your opponent.

Sorry Erik, but this needs to be disabled by default and enabled only by members who want it. It should not be forced to anyone. Especially to members who are not even aware what is going on.

Sorry but limiting is only to home page is not good enough. I am forced to use adblock with Firefox or Opera now.

Ah, now there's an option to have it "Never" show.  Sweet!  Thank you.

Why don't you play correspondence chess by post ?

Because at 44 cents a letter, a typical 30 move game would cost $13.20.  Email is workable.

I changed my setting also.  That is an improvement over being bugged by it on every page.  Thanks for the info.

Folks please remember,  there is no "we"  in  "meebo".....just thinking outloud here....

Part of the reason I have a paid account is to get rid of the ads. Now I get Meebo popping up with ads?? I can and will disable the add-on, but why is an ad-containing "add-on" enabled by default? Seriously unhappy subscriber.

Of course, they could do something really crazy-sensible and just let people turn it off if they want and turn it on if they want. Nuts I know :x

1. Go to your account page.
2. Under Privacy, click "Manage your privacy settings."
3. Under the CHAT BAR, select "Never show" in the list box.
4. Save your settings.

At home I enable meebo and occasionally chat with people.  It doesn't bother me.  However at work, our firewall seems to block the meebo connection (is it peer to peer?) which hangs chess.com.  I admit the moral lesson is obvious Yell

I kind of like the ads. When I'm bored I play a game of chicken to see how long I can keep my mouse on the rollover thingy without the ad popping up. I once made it past the o in video!!

"Never show" was not an option when I made my initial post.
