SoulForHire wrote: The idea of chess.com meet and greets intrigues me because I'm obsessed with social behavior.  My question is, are there others on this site that have made "real life" friends through their chess.com connections?  How did the conversation about meeting up come about?  Did you simply meet for coffee and a chess game or did you spend some time with them?  What was the outcome?  Were they as you imagined them or was it a disaster?  Was it a meeting between friends or was there some sort of deeper connection?

I have met one person from chess.com in real life. I consider her a good friend. We went white water rafting together. I met her son and daughter. I met her daughter's boyfriend, his mother and his brother. She met my husband. We had a blast together. Not much time for talking or chess... but it was fun.

When I met her, it did seem like I knew her well. We hugged each other when we first saw each other. I do think the younger folks in our group were a little more freaked out by the circumstance than the older folks... which seems a bit odd. And when I told my daughters about it... they too seemed to think it was weird. I think it is a factor of them growing up with the internet... they are actually more cautious... on some levels.

We did meet again... she and her friend (her daughter's boyfriend's mother) met me and a group of my friends in Helen, GA. We had a great time.

We are planning a trip together to visit another chess.com member... some day... soon.

For me, it is easier to meet a woman... I feel less uncomfortable about that circumstance. However I have met a few men on this site I think I would like to meet in real life. Whether I would go that far or not... I don't know. It would depend on the person and the circumstance.

I believe you can make a deeper connection with people on this site. If a person is willing to chat with you in the game... which is my preference (I hate that meebo thing)... you can have some very intriguing conversations. Conversations that inspire you to want to know more about the person... and so things go from there.

As far as people falling in love with a person they have never met... I have my doubts as to the reality of such a relationship. I have no doubt you can develop intense feelings for a person during frequent, enjoyable conversations. Love?? Well... hmm. Conversations certainly are a good place to start.

What the heck is wrong with you people!?  I'm talking about Wedding cake!  Haven't you heard, S4hire is getting married.

Hmm... actually, on second thought, I'll take some of that Vegan cake also.  Thanks!

I'm getting married?  When did this happen?  I don't remember you asking, Bob-O.

SoulfulShire is NOT getting married! She's more the adventurous hobbit like the Bagginses or Tooks, not like your settling-down folk like the Mugworts or Bolgers.

@Writch.  I wouldn't be so sure, after all, she doesn't flirt with me near as much as she used to.  Been waitin' for the day she'd leave me alone so I can finally focus on my chess!

He's got to tell me who the groom is first.  I don't recall anyone asking for my hand.  LOL

If anyone does, offer your foot, first. One limb at a time.

(Sorry, that was truly stupid.)

Avatar of Writch
T'were not stupid. I say go ahead and offer the foot first... offer to break it off in their posterior.

I felt compelled to share this.  I came to know of this from a very dear friend of mine who is the grandmother of the victim of this horrible crime.  I share it not as a "carnival" story for people to gawk at, but hopefully she didn't die in vain if someone is saved....
