Ummm, chess.com is not concerned about any "uproar" because chess is a board game. They kinda already know that. That's the whole point. People can play a board game online. You don't play sports online. You play sports where they are designed to be played. Like a golf course, football field, baseball field, ski slope, etc.
its still a sport
If sports are played on a board, with no physical skill necessary, then yes. Sorta like Parcheesi, tic tac toe, and Scrabble. All sports. Along with Clue, monopoly, and go fish.
Yes, I know what a petition is for. It's a request (usually written) presented to authority. It's asking for something, from someone who can grant that ask. The only reason I can see that a petition would be needed is if chess is not a sport. So the petition would be asking authority (such as the dictionary) to define it as a sport. Asking for a change.
Other than the dictionary, what other authority would this petition be presented to?
We'll have to see who sees this. I just want to affect as many people as possible, which in turn will make its way to the staff members and wider chess community. The change I want is for more people to recognize chess as a sport
