Response from Caught Cheater - Worth Reading

Rookandladder, people who take steriods love what they do too... I assure you they don't love the steroids.  What they do (steriods) is wrong, and certainly is no good for the game, but it doesn't mean they don't love it.  The will to win is all part of the game/sport and unfortunately it can cause some serious problems.

At the same time you're wrong if you believe Anton didn't love chess.

All I can think about is all the great things he did on this site... all his time and dedication.

He probably wouldn't want to come back now anyway, even if given a second chance which is a great pity.

Black day for chess.com

Hey Erik,

ICC has a policy if someone is caught cheating once, they have to put it in their status and apologize or ICC will close it for cheating, all their games are erased.  They in essense have to admit it but can still play and they have a (C) aside there name... sort of a nice Scarlett Letter twist.

I am for punishing cheaters... as I hate it when I go through my games history and I see 5-6 accounts closes for cheating (and several games sometimes)... and I definitely will snitch on you!  But I do think there should be the social shame option... ICC even gives a warning of three options

1)  You can admit that you cheated to them and say that you didn't realize you were violating the policy and never do it again

2)  You can admit it, put that you cheated in your notes, apologize to the community and carry a (C) with you name (rating erased)

3)  Deny it against ICC and if they find you are lying it's closed.

I don't agree with number 1... as its just a slap on the hand but you've stole games from several people.  (It's funny I've had a friend who had the nerves to write a post about hating cheaters and was caught cheating!)  But Erik I think the social shame aspect would be VERY effective here because unlike ICC, this site is wayyyy more personal (as I like to call it the facebook of chess).

But being that it's mainly a 2200 + problem... it's annoying for me as I can sometime get superparanoid when sometimes I'm just getting spanked.  lol

Erik you are hardcore!  He was a helper!  You aren't playing about that cheating business huh!

It's obvious Anton loved chess...just look at his page.  I have never even heard of the Kramer variation (I will see what it is now!) - this guy loved chess...I do believe so.

that said, the main point of the message was: don't end up like this guy - don't start cheating.

(I had to think for more than 15 minutes before I started writing this request)

I request SECOND Chance for Anton as somebuddy suggested like on probation or watch. It is not because he was a volunteer (in Live) for a long time but because you (Erik) do realize that his apology IS sincere.

And I am just curious Erik. Did you talk to him BEFORE his account was closed? I reckon that would not make his case any different but it seems to me he was one of the pioneer members of this site and HE LOVED CHESS.COM and losing him is a loss for all. ALAS ........ Frown.

I can agree, and I second the idea about the stigma on the page, if anything else.  If a stigma is the worst thing that can happen, it is no less worse than totally losing the privilege to play.  But I won't complain regardless of your choice, Erik...I respect your work and consideration for us as people who love chess.

Yeah, I'm sure that's what Eric wants to spend his time doing, overseeing the "Cheaters Court of Apologies." I'm sure Live Chess 2.0 will come out a lot faster that way. Wink (we really need a roll eyes emoticon around here btw.)

I concur with everything that has been stated above.  Honesty and Integrity are vital to the game.  When two platers agree to play a game, the trust factor is critical.  When that 2-way agreement has been breached, how can one ever play that person again without thinking he/she will cheat again.  I am sorry to see him go, but hopefully he has learn from all of this.

i suggest that you erik don't take cheating too seriously because you don't know how smart or not smart they are and i think the whole thing of chess is devloping chess skills like for example a little kid playing checkers on a website and is just learning then just gets really good at checkers you can't consider tha cheating the way i think of it is if you have those same moves as a computer in chess or in any other online game you are probally not cheating the only way i would think if someone was cheating is if you erik had a moniotor next to everyone's profile and then somewhere in the profile you could see if they are using a chess program to anyalze current games like what i mean is right when you click on their profile you couls see what's going on like if they have a chess program in another tab or in their browswer

sorry for some of the spelling errors

Dude, obviously the period key on your keyboard is broken. Here, you can cut and paste these next time ..........

lol seriously!  lol

ZION-DAVID

hello all

what cheating was done

i would like to know  and hope i dont do something  by mistake

is there someware a simple list with example and explanation of what not to do ?

ZION-DAVID

hello the best way to punish a cheater is first apologize in public and get his points deleted reset to 1200

maybe all these will help cheaters to corect their way and repent

spinfold

Cheaters are Cheaters no matter how they apologise...it was a clear brain made decision to cheat for what? And to apologise after the damage among players is done is bittersweet at best and really feel sorry for him at worse. A cheat is cheat its really bad when money, property or real reason is absent. People cheat to cheat and will keep doing it on and on. Ban the cheaters! I thought about it too.

Do it behind their back. Much more polite that way...

one more thing, sometimes i think people just think others are using a chess program just to win a few games online well the thing that i don't understand is how would you know if your oppoent is cheating you don't know how smart they are or how dumb they are and i also think for the human society that we all live in obviously it would be really hard to judge your oppoent

Mike, what people do to see if their opponent is cheating is they run the moves through a program like Fritz or Rybka and see if the thought processes match up.  BTW, most stronger players know enough to see if a person is playing according to their ratings.  I have played a person in the past that played in such a strange style, yet seemed to find every weakness in my position, just the way a computer would play.  I didn't report them - I simply quit playing them after that game.  I have played very strong opposition on this site, and the manner of thinking is a lot different - people have fluid trains of thought...a computer is much more analytical, and, shall we put it, unhuman...

This is why I don't think it should have been made public.  This guy has now been given more credit than the vast majority of the chess.com community that has never set a foot out of line!

In todays world where so many make excuses, and blame others.  This person does deserve credit.  Everyone deserves a second chance, and they are not even asking for it.  They owned up to what they did, and that deserves forgiveness.  Never stepping out of line, is the right thing to do.  And the reward of doing the right thing is reward enough.  If youre waiting to be rewarded for doing the right thing then you are doing it for the wrong reasons.
