Sportsmanship

I've been on chess.com several months.  I haven't seen one good sport out of several hundred games.   If its a good game I say that even if I get beat.  I have never had a reply back.  Any time I accepted chat it was always rude - sometimes extremely rude.  I play a lot of FPS and it is far more friendly.  I guess at my newbie level I shouldn't expect more.  When i get to 1200 hopefully it is people are better sports and can recognize good competition.

Some people disable chat. Some people ignore it (probably not even knowing it is there). And there are many kids here too who are probably well advised not to react to any messages from people they don't know.

But when they do respond and are rude, report them. Not much else you can do.

GeneralDigital

yep. i will assume they are kids from now on. Makes sense. Thanks for the insight.

The primary goal is to enjoy the game and improve your skills. Regardless of the behavior of your opponents, your own sportsmanship and attitude are what truly matter.

Sometimes, we don't see the messages. Or maybe we just muted our chat? Who knows? We can't just assume people are being toxic.

Toxicity exists everywhere. Whatever game you play, no matter what rank you are (chess in elo rating or other FPS games like you stated). When is the one time you won't encounter toxicity? The world isn't a friendly filled with all kindness type of world. I experience it occasionally sometimes. It's annoying, but you really can't do much. This goes to the same for many other games.

Wits-end

I play daily games and encountered only one or two negative individuals. Conversely, i met some really good folks from around the world. I’d suggest just muting your chat if your experience is so unpleasant.

Lots of folks get in a zone and fire up a new game too quickly to notice. Poor sports are everywhere. Good luck on the squares OP.

Damn.

I am a terrible player. The only thing I got going is that I practice good sportsmanship.

There is some point when playing chess that you do not practice good sportsmanship. I don't believe anybody has never practiced bad sportsmanship before..

skeldol

That's why I always disable chat. I notice the problem more in bullet, I think the time pressure really winds people up.

But there are a lot of good sports in chess. But the good sports rarely say anything in chat, they just move on to the next game.

That's true...more often than not, it is the POOR SPORT who makes a comment during a game...

Your expectation that people chat with you is entirely unreasonable. Many people have chat off because it is distracting. And, OTB, you are never chatting with your opponent. Chess is called a "thinking man's game" for a reason.

I have the chat disabled. There's nothing I want to hear or tell strangers on the internet regardless of our game outcome. Peace of mind.
