Because removing the Today button and making it only accessible from News, and merging the today and forum/club alerts makes things less efficient. All of these are rational reasons that are echoed throughout the forums.

It's a disorienting side effect of merging Home and Today But I already spoke about this earlier in the thread, so you can look there for more reasons.
