Too many unrated puzzles

Sort:

I get that there have to be unrated puzzles, but there are way too many and some are just terrible. I keep getting up to 5 in a row which generally require several moves. Sometimes there are several good moves, but because they are not the moves programmed into the unrated puzzle you get points deducted. I think the unrated puzzles should be lumped together as "beta" puzzles which would not deduct from your overall rating. Chess.com can gain enough data to assign a rating, but we don't get punished for playing them!

Thanks,

Mike

I only see one unrated puzzle in your last 25 and it looks like it raised your rating by 1 point despite your getting it wrong.

It also seems like you only got two rated higher than your rating. Do you have custom settings on?

Zarplod
I don’t see a way to choose custom on the iPhone app.

Is there a way to disable unrated puzzles?

They may be unrated for you, but to lower rated players, they are rated. Your rating is too high for them :-D !

The puzzles just don't have an established rating yet, but you can't turn that off.

You can't set ranges in rated puzzles. I believe the selection algorithm has changed and it is giving almost exclusively lower rated puzzles. I have bug reported it.

umm, my score on puzzles hovers between 825-1,000.  Not very high at all. I think puzzles are hard for me because I suck at chess.  :-)

It definitely hurts your score.  I started yesterday with a score in the high 900s and minutes later my score was in the low 700s because of these absurd puzzles.  One puzzle actually missed that you could mate in two moves and had you doing all sorts of stupid things instead and it deducted 13 points!!!!!!!!!!!  Ridiculous.

I'm thinking of cancelling my chess.com account and going with some good tutorial classes like the ones described here:  https://digitaldefynd.com/best-chess-courses/  lots of good choices.  There are lots of other options for playing chess online too.

Chess.com seems to be deaf to our complaints about the unrated puzzles.

they literally can't, if u get one wrong it'll give u +1 rating

Look at my scores.  I dropped over 200 points because of these unrated puzzles.  I don't know what you're experience is but I lose ab out 13 points every time I play one!  I'm giving up on chess.com and searching for a better option with more thoughtful features for the money.

It's not the unrated puzzles that are hurting you.  As I showed, your rating went up even when you got the problem wrong.

If you look further into your stats, you can probably figure out what you are doing wrong.

It's too bad you reset your puzzle rating today. You can't look at the breakdown of which themes are giving your trouble.

At least you can see that you got no unrated puzzles at all today.

I am a very reasonable man, but what you are saying contradicts fact. I literally dropped from 965 to 723 after getting hit by about 9 unrated puzzles in a row.  I'm done.  I found some great puzzles on a few other sites today.  My biggest mistake was not researching chess.com enough before paying for a premium membership.

I honestly do not  see what you're talking about.  I lose on average 13 points per unrated puzzle because they seem rather arbitrary at times.  Before I reset today I had about 11 in a row and it destroyed my average.  Regardless, I found a site with great puzzles and less BS. I know you are all trying to help, but what you are saying contradicts what  I see happening when I play puzzles.  If I'm not getting it is because I am seeing something completely different on my iPhone app, or I'm a colossal moron. The latter is not at all out of the realm of possibility.

  1. Here’s proof that unrated puzzles do in fact effect your rating. I had 805, after one unrated, down to 789. Imagine when you hit 8 or 9 in a row.

I believe it means that the puzzle itself is unrated. Meaning that it doesn’t have a set rating I’ve what elo normal gets it right/wrong. Could be wrong but that’s my thought.

Again, on your last 25, you had two unrated puzzles. One, you got wrong, raised your rating by a point. One you got right, raised your rating by 15 points.

It is the puzzles you get wrong which keep your score from rising. You got 11 wrong out of the last 25. Your rating rose by only 1 point.

Focus on making better move selections.

I can only see your last 25. I don't see 9 unrated in a row. I see only 2 unrated.  The next time you get a bunch of unrated in a row, take a screenshot and post it here.

That is what I've been talking about.  Unrated puzzles.  I think we were misunderstanding each other.  What were you talking about?

If you're losing that many points, it is a rated puzzle. Pending puzzles don't decrease your rating at all and can only increase it.

If you fail a puzzle and retry it, it will show unrated on the retry attempt but may still show you the point loss from the initial attempt. My Android app doesn't show that, but maybe iOS does.
