NM isn't even a FIDE title. It's awarded by national federations such as USCF.

Nowadays, you only need to play 5 rated games and you only need to score at least 0.5 points to get a rating.

FIDE is the international chess organisation. There is something called FIDE ratings and FIDE titles which are awarded to you by FIDE.
