When a child learns that Santa Claus isn't real, they upgrade (downgrade? stay-the-same-grade?) to believing in 'God' -- most of us continue to need that fear of punishment/promise of reward to keep us from behaving like complete jerks.
That's the idea, anyway. Doesn't always work. Sometimes makes things much worse. We're so cute.

A (failed) model / explanation of life and beyond. The latter one is part of that explanation, not part of the real life. That idea of God is based on the sole deficit of wisdom, of missing explanations of simple relations in our environment and the belief of something better there has to be, something almighty to protect in bad times.
