agree with opinion that offer adding small panel with player GMT, from the left/right of it's country flag.
it will be very helpful!!!
What's the time, Mr. Wolf?

I'll be honest - we're probably not going to get to do this in the next 12 months. We have many other very important projects in the pipeline. I kinda see why you would want it, but we have things like TEAMS and VIDEOS to do before saving convenience time for using the atlas :)

Also relevant - where are many of the places ? EG Kazan. Djoubti, Wroclav,Tegucigalpa.... just to mention a few of the better known townships. then there is Moscow in Ayrshire Scotland , several Austins in good old U S of A together with other immigrant named townhips-Paris, Glasgow, Baltimore, New York, lots of renamed ex colonial locations etc. etc.--are we getting the message ---all this interesting stuff takes time off actual playing to investigate so if it was not too difficult for the boffins could not the time info already gathered and recorded by the joining process be displayed simply as a Time correction Factor.... after all system does already notify hours and even minutes left to play before time wipe outs.. the info is there already in system without having to go outside it on to other systemsand back again.

entertaining reading...... But the only time I think is important is tinitime. If you are looking for that extra edge, perhaps more advantage may be obtained by having breathylyzers being used prior to play...... I like playing the higher rated players AFTER their martinis..... not before..... It would help to know the right time to clean their clock!
Eric??? Any thoughts? Can we squeeze a few numbers by the flag indicating their blood alcohol level? Maybe even a martini glass icon next to the online icon so we know who to challenge when..... Premium members get automatic ratings protection based on their alcohol level. Merely a slight adjustment per .01 would be fine. Premium members may also choose to have their games become unrated if they select the maximum alcohol level option in their preferences..... Of course regarding non premium members.... they just receive a steady deluge of beer ads....
Speaking of which, artfizz..... I am convinced that you must have had a few too many pints of draft on the way home just to come up with this crazy subject altogether! BTW..... do you have the time for another game?

I'm not going to make the cardinal sin of continuing a topic after it has been sensibly ruled on (or am I?) but xqsme raises a point which is doubly valid. There must be useful, non-chess tools and websites for use during a game that enhance the playing experience without infringing the rules.
http://www.worldtimezone.com/index.php has already been mentioned by skagmati.
babelfish.yahoo.com obviously for unexpected comments (like the "joink" I received recently).
Any other suggestions?

Get a set of atomic clocks, one for each of the timezones. It might cost a pretty penny but it would be worth it in the long run.
Most people are here to play chess and only to play chess, not to worry if the person they are playing is tired, drunk, man, woman, young or old. We're really here to enjoy the game and to learn from all walks of life the different styles or tactics that are out there, and of course to have fun playing. However, for those who wish to chat or become more aquainted there is a game chat box available which allows open communication (assuming they both speak a common language) so we can talk about anything we want, even trivial matters such as the time of day where your opponent is.
As far as a closing statement at the end of the game, "gg" works for me anytime day or night without worring if its their morning, afternoon, evening, or night.
I think it's a good idea and it could be developed to include a time-stamp on moves so that we know if our opponent is an insomniac (my apologies if I'm repeating something already covered as I haven't read all the replies).

I begin to understand why views expressed in the forums are so polarised. What evidence can you offer for your statement above? It would be informative to run a poll to gather solid data.
I happen to think the opposite is the case - that most people on chess.com choose to play humans rather than machines so as not to exclude the possibility of some human interaction. Why are the forums here? Why are they so extensively used? What proportion of players disable chat? chess.com is called a community for a reason. Many people add a photo and say something about themselves in their profiles. When I play someone, I quite often consult their profile. I imagine many other people do this too.
Let's play chess!

agreed! :)
The only evidence I have to support this claim comes from my own experiences on this website. It seems to me that most people I game with are content to say nothing at all and happy just to play the game. As a matter of fact, when I switched to Mozilla Firefox I lost my chat box feature for a while - I was unable to chat at all during the game, but I could read whatever the opponent wrote. During this time period of not having the chat feature, I noticed most people didn't say anything at all if I said nothing to them. I also noticed that not talking to my opponent improved my concentration on playing the game, which is exactly why I am a member here, to play the game. This is why I feel it is not good to worry about things like the opponent's time of day or where they live or what they look like or how old they are. Just pretend they are a computer, it may help your game!

the great part is, everyone can enjoy the site how they want :) socially, play only, read only, comedy... have fun!

Wait until he tickles you. He likes to get me right under the arms where my ribs show, and he...
oh.. wait. I wasn't supposed to talk about this.

i *hate* it if I blunder and lose (or opp blunders and loses) and opp says gg. gg imho shoud be reserved for good games. [here i play only corr so the case doesnt arise here]
Thanks, Skakmati, that certainly answers MANY of my questions. I can see that you are 5 hours behind me as worldtimezone.com lists 5 U.S. cities: Alaska, Hawaii, Los Angelos, Chicago and New York. No mention of California - but I already know the time there - thanks to RedSoxpawn.
Rather than change the chess.com interface, how about if a representative from each city lets me know the time in his/her city?
