What's the time, Mr. Wolf?

For some inexplicable reason, people are always asking me the time when they play against me in turn-based games: I really need that clock! A more urgent requirement, however, is timestamps on messages (within turn-based chess).Without knowing WHEN they asked the time, and HOW LONG their request took to arrive, how am I supposed to reply ACCURATELY? Correspondence chess must have already solved this problem ages ago.

What's particularly neat about the idea of putting the time information alongside the country name (only shown when you hover the mouse over the flag), is that it will not disturb anyone playing LiveChess - nor anyone who does not want a constant reminder of it. I have high hopes that this feature will be added to Wishlist#10 or so.

you know bowanza.......  I realize now why most of your games are chat free

maniac2008

well... i think it is a great idea!!!

Kingfisher

Use this:

maniac2008

what is that do??

artfizz

I'm grateful to Kingfisher in posting#86 for his suggestion of http://www.weltzeit.de/zeitzonenkarte.php - as I am to Redsoxpawn in posting#19 and Shakmati in posting #41 for their similar suggestions of www.worldtimeserver.com . However, as xqsme points out in posting#46, this raises the further problem of identifying WHERE ARE these places; some are cities or states in the U.S. not explicitly mentioned on these maps; some are remote (to me) countries - also not mentioned explicitly on these maps.

Far be from me to suggest that updating the chess.com-countries.html file to become chess.com-countries-and-timezones.html seems straightforward. I'm satisfied with Erik's explanation that this request is both low priority and, to many members, inexplicable.

Yeah, I think chess.com may have temporarily disabled my chat feature because they were losing too many members.

maniac2008

but why would they do that...??

bowanza

Why would they do what?

How about asking Erik to make a map that has time zones on it

"How about asking Erik to make a map that has time zones on it"

How about doing a google search for time zone map :)

maniac2008

lol...

why they disabled ur chat

bowanza

I imagine a correlation was drawn between members quitting chess.com and members who played chess with me.  So they hoped I would smarten up if they disabled my chat for a bit.  Obviously, it didn't work.

bowanza

True, but he wasn't a chessplayer now, was he?

Time is only a number? Poor Einstein! He wasted much of his life trying to master the paradoxes of time and you clocked it in one.

So what are you saying?  That the opponent's time of day is in fact an important factor in playing chess?  If so, how is it important?  Can you state your post in a positive manner?  Can you tell me why you would want to know his time of day?

I play chess morning, noon, and night.  I play whenever I feel like it.  If I don't feel like it, I don't play.  As long as it is a good time for me to play I play regardless of my time of day.  Likewise, if my opponent creates a seek or accepts my seek, then it must be a good time of day for him too.  If he often plays late at night while he is tired and/or drunk, his rating will reflect that.  I don't care why his rating is what it is, I just see it and if its in my range than we can play.  Anybody for a cold beer?  It is Miller time....

 Makes sense

I've picked a solution that meets my needs.
I am going to use a Notepad file - mapping member names to time difference.

This forum topic worked well for me.
My idea got floated and then refined in the crucible of honest debate.
The level of support was measured - and found wanting.
We move on - new friendships forged - to the next topic.
A winning formula - well done, Erik!

I don't lie about time or weather.I seriously would not lie when I say a wall cloud

could form tomorrow, drop a tornado, and blow me away.I'm set to Pacific time

so look up the time in Oklahoma if you want to see my time.
