If there were complaints from moderators, it's unlikely they would be in public areas unless it was from an ex-mod

theres never been a salary or wage for being moderator for any sort of forum. Discord, reddit, the list goes on, its not normal. It's not a proper job, you don't have a set amount of hours, and it's done in the comfort of your home usually.
The forums aren't the important part of chess.com. Its interface is, gamemodes, etc. programmers and the like are payed by chess.com, but normal forum mods won't get that because the service they're providing can be realistically done by anyone.
Like someone else said, the chess.com mod team could band together and ask for a wage but they'll get rejected. its not worth paying someone to moderate the forums a few hours a day. you're not providing a service thats valuable enough that they would need to pay you for you to remain.
I wouldn't be too sure about that, quality modding is a full time job and require professionalism above all. Especially if you are a company you usually hire a team of community managers to avoid any embarrassment.
I am a moderator, and I see my role as making sure the site is a safe place where people can have fun and play chess.
I like the site, I like the place and I like being part of make it good.

You do have an altar though, yeah? https://www.chess.com/forum/view/community/a-day-in-the-life-of-a-moderator

Thank you for sharing I needed a refresher. I’ve been lacking, only staring at Erik’s profile photo and chanting for 3 minutes twice a day. Don’t tell Martin. 🤫

The dart board would have given you an aim, a direction, a purpose.

I feel sorry for you @KeeganJL28_M, you have been missing 2 minutes of chant daily.
I would recommend catching up and spending the next 24h singing and chanting for our beloved leader. You will feel invigorated!
Take the example of Reddit/Quora/similar websites. Tell me the last time you saw a Reddit moderator getting paid for moderating. It's more like charity work than anything, since people WANT to help the website be better, they're not forced to.
Having said that, can anybody tell me how I can apply for moderator? : ))
They are not paid because they have renounced materialism in order to gain moral clarity. They fast regularly in order to maintain self discipline. Also, they observe a strict code of abstinence to ensure the fair moderation of the forums.

its not a full time job. If you're saying that you've either been retired for 2 decades, or you're a teenager.

Why? Just go on LinkedIn , look for social media managers or community managers you will see that they are hired full time. I don't see why you need to attack my unfortunate unemployment as a reason for not having bildfolds on.

Because your "Unfortunate unemployment" is the reason you have no idea how employment works, and what goods someone can provide.
There's lots of paid online jobs, you're correct. however being a FORUM MODERATER, ISN'T one. There's managers, advertisers, programmers, HR, etc, but being a forum mod isn't one of these paid online jobs.

Sure if you look at it as ONLY forum moderator . because that is a part time role that can be done by community managers and they DO hire for forum moderator as part time. (As in a paid job or gig) . So if you are a forum moderator you can definitely find job offers for that role specifically and then moderate several communities.
As for what they can provide , they can provide some peace of mind that things are being handled by a professional , as in someone who knows what being professional means and they don't create all sorts of drama.
Anyways your whole nonsense sentence about "How employment works", and I say its nonsense because you just put it out there an empty insult without any actual substance. If you knew "how employment works" you'd know how to explain it, but you don't:
You only say something along lines of "you don't know how the sun rises in the morning because you are out of a job now". gee thanks.
I can't say why there's no paid compensation of some type. However, moderators moderate when they want to and have no type of required schedule.
Don't you get free premium or am i wrong?
they get paid with smiles
Something they can't see. A smiley on the other hand ...
