Why do people let games abort?

I just joined earlier this month, and mainly play live chess 10 min blitz, I've noticed sometimes players let the game abort (it's happened to me maybe 4 or 5 times), is this simply an issue with their internet connection or do people let it go on purpose? I only had it happen on my end once because my computer froze up. Do players actually not want to play against me or does this kinda thing occur frequently with anyone else? Just curious. happy.png

Some players abort the game if they get the black pieces, which many people have complained about in the past.

wow, I didn't even think of that.

People have been complaining about that for years, and even calling for some penalty to be imposed when a player frequently aborts after getting the black pieces. Other players abort games because they are trying to get paired with a low rated player.

These are some of the reasons that I play daily chess. Daily chess may have more cheating, but live chess has more bad sportsmanship.

I agree, alot of players have very bad sportsmanship, especially if they lose their Queen, lol I swear a good 5 out of 10 will quit every time.

I think white has less of an advantage in slower time controls. In daily games, many people have about the same winning percentage with black as they do with white.

People abort in the case that they clicked "play" by accident.

I did that at least once when I first joined chess.com.

Good to read all these responses! I had no idea anyone would have that big of an issue with this type of stuff. Personally I like getting paired against higher rated, I see it as a challenge and a learning experience, I also don't mind losing, I make my own blunders and try to learn from those and other mistakes to improve on...especially in blitz!

On a related note, to all players: DON'T RESIGN if you only lose a minor piece (knight/bishop) in blitz!! :-D Unless it's a lost endgame, or you are horribly down on time... many times I have blundered, only to regain it later on, and vice versa. Keeps it interesting!!

Could be that they want to play a high ratings guy with a rating higher than theirs so that if they win they gain a lot and if they lose they lose few

You can block an opponent, then you won't bet paired up with that opponent any more. That's what I usually do when somebody aborts a game against me.

If someone aborts a game with me, I am unable to start a new game for several minutes afterward. I don't know if this is true  for everyone, or if it is a quirk caused by my operating system, my web browser, or something else.  Are other people here able to issue a new challenge immediately after an aborted game?

So I definitely block anyone who aborts me, so that hopefully my pool of opponents will hopefully be cleaned out eventually, and that won't happen as much in the future.

Do many players dislike playing against the grob opening?
