Sure, but if anything like that ever happened they'd be obliged to change the name of the town.... It seems to me that it would be safe to move somewhere where nothing ever happens.
Why is it STILL possible for people to find us on the interactive map???

Change the name to Deadly Boring.

What a headache. Can someone confirm that I'm not showing up on the map now?
Are you worried about your own location or just your friends? A quick Google search shows your location at about half a dozen internet sites such as Facebook, Amazon, Yale Arab Alumni, MouthShut, etc.

If anyone has any concerns with regard to privacy issues...then you can always remain nameless and faceless. Once you are on the net...no info you place here is private. Let the buyer beware.

as usual, she's worried about one thing and one thing only--drama.

Location can mean either one, but because Google spies on us so much in the name of being helpful, it is not difficult to find out a lot about a person even if a city name is all you know.

as usual you play the ignorant idiot. you don't even know the context of when I made this post so go put your head back up where you pulled it out from.

But question remains why some are so worried to be found out.
Because some people live in rural areas...where other people who live in those areas can more easily access them by easily spotting them on a stupid map that makes it convenient.
The chance of someone in your specific area bothering to do an IP search on you is slim...but when you have a dumb map like the one they are using on here...it alerts anyone who may be in a similar area that you are located conveniently to them. In essence, creating potential for god only knows what. And that's just the worst case...some of us would rather not have that info so glaringly available.

There are sites for a nominal fee if you have a first and last name can find not only where you live but all public record information so an interactive map is the least of the avenues in which to find someone...

Generally speaking, I don't think that websites should publish Geo-IP data without the users opting in (and knowing exactly what they are opting in to). This is the kind of thing that Facebook would do, then backtrack when all of their users are outraged.
See, I know some people who work/worked at Facebook, and they're not by any means stupid... I just think that when you're immersed too much in the culture at that company that you lose track of what Joe Regular User considers over-the-line.

It's funny how people with weird ideas always think they've risen above others rather than sunk below them.
That statement is often true to be sure, but it's also appalling how people believe nonsense without ever questioning it just because the masses do.
Hey I have a Karen Silkwood problem and an ex wife who wants me dead. I don't bother trying to obfuscate my ip.
Anonymity on the interet is an illusion. There are steps you can take to try and hide, but many of those "anonymous" proxy servers and mail servers? Governments have back door access 24/7. Even the TOR network.
If somebody wants you bad enough, you're toast.
If someone literally wants you dead, I would not put the fact that you live in Boring, Oregon on your profile. I have been to Boring, and you are narrowing it down to what- five, six houses? I think they could just do process of elimination if they really wanted to cap you.
