1 Queen or 2 Rocks

Which stronger in the end games, 1 Queen or 2 Rocks?

varelse1

First question to ask yourself in a major piece ending: who has the initiative? Whoever it is, prolly has the advantage.

I sorta like the queen. Only because if I don't like the position, I can usually bail out with a perpetual.

But strictly speaking, the 2 rooks are stronger. If those 2 rooks both attack a pawn, the lone queen cannot stop them from taking it.

I think varelse1 nailed it.

Simply from my own experience I do worse when playing Q vs Two Rooks. The queen does give a better chance of stalemate with those fancy diagonals and all tho which may be just as good as a win in certain situations such as a pawn deficit.

It depends on the pawn structure and rook coordination. Like many chess questions, "it depends".

Thanks all :)

batgirl

Depends on the size of the rocks.

blueemu

Even one rock can beat a queen, if you bash her over the head with it.

October_sky

Ah man, batgirl and blueemu beat me to it. I was also going to make a joke about rocks

batgirl

We're rock stars.

I love internet forums these days. So many kids with so much free time! Glad you got your question answered OP.

batgirl

Is that rock it science?
