you will never win, it's a draw. If I were your opponent I will move my knights only my king.

Ah, at last someone who's truly paying attention!

AndyClifton

Btw, although yes this ending is indeed very rare (I've never gotten it, nor have I ever seen anyone else get it in an actual live game), according to Botvinnik (in Soviet Championship 1941) Lilienthal had gotten it no less than three times!...and failed to find the win each time.

SimonWebbsTiger

thanks Andy -- I remembered there was a Soviet master who had it a few times with draws in them all!

ChessisGood

Another part to the problem: How do I force his king into the corner in the first place??

AndyClifton

Actually, that's most of the problem... Smile

ChessisGood

@AndyClifton: Can YOU do this checkmate? Undecided

AndyClifton

Maybe, maybe not.  But then, I'm not the one who keeps on asking about it. Smile

ChessisGood

Well, one good thing I can say about you: You sure are great when someone wants to keep a thread going! Tongue out

AndyClifton

Yes, I too have noticed that about myself. Laughing

armhow

Common sense tells me no two knights can mate an opponent in an end game.

AndyClifton

Then your common sense is wrong. Smile

Only if the opponent has a pawn on the board, and depending where it is.. and then, you'll still have the difficult task of finding the right moves, of course, barring you have enough time.

Scottrf

I'd offer/accept a draw on either side.

Can't Black just throw away the pawn?

How will he persuade white to take it?

The main reason you cannot force a mate with K+2N v K+p is because the Ns cannot gain a tempo.  They shift square color every time they move.

Threaten to queen it. If Whte tries to blocade the pawn then the rest of the material won't be enough to mate anyway.

The key is to blockade the pawn until the proper moment when the knight can come and deliver mate without stalemate. It's much easier said than done. I don't know how to actually do it and don't really care to learn right now since it will likely never come up. I've never even had BNK vs. K

But you CAN force mate in many positions of K+2N vs. K+P

But, you CANNOT force mate if the opponent with the K+p knows enough endgame technique to avoid those positions by simply separating the K from the p and just giving it up.  Then there is no mate.  It is mostly when the opponent with the K+p tries to get more from the position by attempting to queen the pawn that he gets in trouble.  If he knows endgame technique he knows that those positions are rare and it is best to just take the draw.

Yes its about the fiftieth time its been said, people still comment how impossible it is. It is VERY UNLIKELY BUT POSSIBLE. TROITZKY LINE.
