chess has been humbling

So, I recently watched Queens Gambit and it got me curious about chess. I download this app, did the first 4-5 tutorials and then started playing 5-5. Of course, I was getting crushed. I am quickly learning just how complicated and layered this game is. I was thinking 5-5 is perfect for a quick game and not overthinking. Yet, I can’t think fast enough to understand why someone made a move or the consequences of my move. If I do the ‘obvious’ move it is a trap.

So yah, my respect for this game has gone up greatly. If I want to play long term I can’t play speed game.

That’s it. No advice as I am getting that every time I play (more so when I also lose)

I agree. I have not yet watched the Queens Gambit but my boyfriend taught me the basics then bought a boa

a set for me. My cousin told me about chess.com. I am hooked. sometimes I am mentally tired after a game. I still stink but have miraculously won a couple of games. zGood stuff for my old brain!

Hey, first, good for you for keeping at it.  And yes, play with long enough time controls that you have time to think!  I find 30 min. to be great for me, but 15 would still be a great improvement.

Chess is fantastic and yes very complicated, you're right about playing longer games where you'll have time to think, 5 minutes isn't really enough as a beginner.

Chess certainly isn’t easy to master.

I strongly advise you stick to rapid time formats only... IF you want to improve. This video explains why.

Agree with this completely. Don't try to be like Hikaru or all those other blitz experts right from the start!

LOVE this!
I started playing after Queen’s Gambit too. I told myself that this WOULD not be a bandwagon phase where I stopped playing after a week. I really want to integrate this as a new hobby and keep improving until I can win almost as much as I lose.
But I’ve been humbled greatly by the experience and my losing streak is enormous. In a 5|5 all I can do is stumble around, so I don’t dare play too many quick games right now. Even in daily I have to struggle to keep track of the game’s progress after several hours.
Someone told me to just keep practicing practicing practicing, which is my encouragement to YOU from one beginner to another. Really hoping I resist the urge to quit, long enough to get halfway decent at this. Hoping for the both of us!!

Honestly, even if I lose, if I can pull off one cool move it makes the game worth it. Hopefully I can increase the number of good moves in games so the analysis isn't giving me the old "?!" for every single move.

The Queen's Gambit also renewed my interest in chess again as well. I have downloaded a few chess apps as well as watching multiple Youtube videos to help revitalize my chess skills. I cannot tell you how grateful I am that I am not the only one who's been influenced by such an inspiring show. I foresee good things for you my friend, and if you do not get overwhelmed with the technical parts of chess as I did and quit you won't regret it. One more thing, watching The Queen's Gambit made me realize something. You have to be determined to learn everything about the game of chess and never let anyone or anything stand in your way of accomplishing that goal. Good luck in your chess career.
