Hey there! I'm also a beginner, but I'd recommend focusing on opening principles (nothing advanced like lines or variations, just standard things like piece tempos). Also, I'd make sure that all of your pieces are protected at all times. Additionally, if any of your opponent's pieces are left hanging you should take advantage of that. Always check your moves before you make them, and if you make mistakes that's alright -- you're still learning.

If you're looking to study, I could argue that tactics are important at your level. It's whatever makes you comfortable, though!

Good luck!

Perhaps, it would be a good idea to look at Discovering Chess Openings, a book about opening principles.

Perhaps, it would also be useful to use books like First Steps: 1 e4 e5 and First Steps: Queen's Gambit

as sources of illustrative games with explanations intended for those just starting to learn.

That idea seems to me to be seriously wrong. One could only obey that rule by avoiding a lot of standard play such as:

"... For players with very limited experience, I recommend using openings in which the play can be clarified at an early stage, often with a degree of simplification. To accomplish this safely will take a little study, because you will have to get used to playing wiith open lines for both sides' pieces, but you can't eliminate risk entirely in the opening anyway. ... teachers all over the world suggest that inexperienced players begin with 1 e4. ... You will undoubtedly see the reply 1 ... e5 most often when playing at or near a beginner's level, ... After 2 Nf3, 2 ... Nc6 will occur in the bulk of your games. ... I recommend taking up the classical and instructive move 3 Bc4 at an early stage. ..." - IM John Watson in a section of his 2010 book, Mastering the Chess Openings, Volume 4

I totally agree with this! Play the Italian quiet game as shown above. That way you get a good opening.

Try to get your knights and bishops out and caste. Dont make a lot of pawn moves in the beginning. Try not to blunder pieces.

you sound like someone from lich**s.org, no offense. Just the way you say "chessdotcom", lol tongue.png Rumor has it that lich**s.org-ers say "chessdotcom" and not "chess.com" to avoid accidentally linking anyone to the chess.com site.

Anyways, if what I said above makes no sense, just ignore it happy.png

I sent a friend request.
