How is this a draw?

I know this must be an obvious beginner question, but how is this a draw?

Its called a stalemate when your opponent doesn’t have any legal moves but isn’t checkmated
Avatar of Strangemover

That is a stalemate. Black has no legal moves and is not in check, thus the result is a draw. Remember this and if you find yourself in a similar situation be careful not to let it happen again!

Ahh gotcha. So you gotta mate by putting him in check? Didn't realize this could result in a draw, that's such a bummer haha.

Correct. So probably the simplest way to checkmate in your example was a7 Kg2 a8=Q Kh2 Qh8+ Kg2 Qh1#

R1f2+ Kh1 Rd3 Kg1 Rd1# is faster.

Yes, but is it simpler?

Thanks for the feedback.

Ladder mate can't be that hard to see.

i always blunder when im winning an opponent like 700 higher than me then i blunder my queen when im moves from mate and UGHGUGUUHGUHGUHGHGUHGUHHUGHUGHUHGUHGUHGHGGUuh

Since this is a way for an opponent to catch a draw instead of an obvious loss players will often try to find moves that will lead to a stalemate, so look out for it when you're ahead, don't allow the opponent to get locked like this.

The black King has no legal moves to do.

yeah, when you have a lot of more pieces vs. a lone king be careful because the result will not ALWAYS be a win for you.    make sure to either see where the enemy king could go to, or just keep giving checks until you checkmate to make sure stalemate doesn't happen because remember, stalemate cannot happen if the king is in check.

I've noticed many beginners stalemate in the queen endgame so here is a 5-Step, easy process to aviod that:

Step 1. Get your queen a knight's jump away from the enemy king. What I mean by that is to place your queen in a spot that if it where a knight, it would be checking the king. if you want to learn how pieces move click here

alright, Step 2. Keep coping the enemy's king moves, which means, if the king goes diagonally you go diagonally with the queen, if it goes down you go down etc.

Step 3. (this is the most important one so pay attention) once the enemy king reaches a corner of the board, YOU MUST STOP FOLLOWING THE KING. otherwise, sadly it would be stalemate...

Step 4. once you saw the king reach a corner and stopped with your queen, then you'll notice the enemy king will have to keep moving back and forth between 2 squares. so now move your own king near to the enemy king.

Step 5. once you have your king in front of the enemy king, then just move your queen in directly in front of the enemy king and Checkmate!!

so that's it! Hope you learned something here happy.png

hope you never draw this endgame again wink.png

if you still don't understand some steps, there is a sample so im sure you will understand.
