Improving means taking the necessary time to look at a variety of areas such as how to get a decent opening, learning tactical mot ifs so that you might hopefully take advantage when such a position occurs in a game and having a decent understanding of end game technique so that when you gain an advantage, you are able to convert that advantage into a win.
Playing Blitz while fun is a no-no for improving. You don’t have time to think, you can’t spend 10 to 15 minutes on a particular position as you try to grasp the imbalances or where the weaknesses might be in both your opponent’s and your position. It leads to making a lot of errors and having winning chance thrown away by a careless mistake by trying to play “beat the clock”.
