My account is sort of new but I have been playing chess for  a long time however my ranking is stalled at the range of 190 - 230. I play have played 254 games so that is not the problem  but I only win 37% of the time. Would anyone help.

It's good that you want to improve.

What are you doing to improve?

Have you taken any of the lessons that tell you how to best open a game and develop your pieces? There are some free lessons here for players new to chess.

Do you do puzzles?  They are a great way to learn.   Puzzle Rush is fun.  As a basic member, I would choose the survival mode and see how long you can last.

I like the endgame drills:

Let's take a look at your last game:

Do you remember this position?  You played Rb4.  That wasn't good.

Did you think about taking the queen? Why didn't you?

Ok thanks i think I did that by mistake

monkey-armory

well yeah I thought that but I win a lot by my opponent timing out but maybe I will try something longer.

Would 10 minutes be long enough.

It's up to your personal needs.  If you would need an hour to see that the queen was hanging in that positionI posted, then perhaps daily chess is right for you.   You can take an hour if you need it!

But perhaps more than more time, you need more basic skills in chess.  You need to relatively quickly see what pieces are attacked, what pieces are hanging, what the point of your opponent's last move was, and so on.

I think you can learn those basic skills and chess.com has a lot of tools to help you learn them.  That's why I suggested the endgame drills and puzzle rush.  You should give them a try every day.  I know you are limited as a basic member, but every once a day would help.

Try to remember your opponent is also striving to win.

Try to see what they are up to, before making your own move.

I believe the best way to improve as a beginner is to think: "What will my opponent do after what I play?" This will help you all the way from 200 to 2000, from there on up I think it's subconscious.

It sounds daunting to repeat this 40-60 times a game, but it will really improve your play.

Also, at 200-1400 level, common tactical and mating patterns are very helpful. From there on up, it's exceedingly easy to see knight forks and skewers. Doing a lot of puzzles and improving your pattern recognition will also help. I recommend doing it one theme at a time, to practice that, and then moving onto another.

Hi! My name is Lauren Goodkind and I’m a respected  chess coach and chess YouTuber who helps beginners out :

Send me one of your games and I'll be happy to analyze the game for free on my YouTube channel.

Here’s more  ideas to help you get better.

-I recommend two books for you: “50 Poison Pieces”   and “Queen For A Day: The Girl’s Guide To Chess Mastery.”  Both books are available on Amazon.com.  Both books are endorsed by chess masters!

-If you are serious about chess, I highly recommend you hiring a chess coach to help you.

-Also consider all checks and captures on your side and also your opponent’s side. Always as, “If I move here, where is my opponent going to move?”. Do this for every single move!

-Play with a slow time control, such as G/30 so you have plenty of time to think before every move.

-Feel free to ask my question on my live chess livestream Youtube channel, every Sunday from 1-2pm PST.

Thank you everyone for your comments. I did go and change to 10 minute time controls  and in my first game I won I made many many blunders along the lines of 17 but with the extra time to think during the end game I was able to make good choices and successfully put my opponent in checkmate something I do very rarely.  maybe I will move on the longer time controls to see if they will help me in the start.https://www.chess.com/analysis/game/live/48355735423

You have observed 2 things:

1. you win only 37% of the time

2. your rating does not go up

Do you think there is some hidden connection between points 1 and 2?
