Openings for beginners

Hello everyone, I am a beginner and I am looking for some good openings with white and black.

My rating is 900 rapid and around 800 in blitz and bullet.

My question is Which openings (In your opinions) are the best for me and people in my skill level. (I am an attacking player and like strong attacks and sharp games.)

Right now I play a lot of Italian with white and Kings Indian with black and sometimes Sicilian.

Please share your thoughts.  grin.png

I play queens gambit with white

ArjunNinjaX150

Yes I did try queen's gambit. Its just that almost EVERYONE knows how to counter it and to me.. Its just not that fun to play all the time.

I am even trying out king's gambit with white now and i have to say that I am liking it.

Anything else for black?

"I am a beginner and I am looking for some good openings with white and black."
++ The simplest and best for beginners and world champions alike is to defend 1 e4 e5 and 1 d4 d5 as black and to open 1 e4 as white.

"My rating is 900 rapid and around 800 in blitz and bullet."
++ Openings should be the least of your worries. Try not to blunder pieces or pawns.

"I play a lot of Italian with white" ++ That is good
"Kings Indian with black" ++ That is difficult to play
"sometimes Sicilian" ++ That is difficult to play

"I did try queen's gambit." ++ That is good

"I am even trying out king's gambit" ++ That is not good, but playable.

Best is to always play the same openings against all opponents and all time controls so as to accumulate experience.
Your Sicilian - King's Indian Defence - Italian is certainly good.
1 e4 e5 - 1 d4 d5 - 1 e4 is simpler.

You might give the Vienna Game & Gambit a try. This is an aggressive, attacking opening which is very popular at the amateur level, and playable even by advanced players.

For more opening suggestions check out the chess openings tier lists videos by GM Hikaru Nakamura and IM Levy Rozman (aka 'GothamChess'). There are separate tier list videos for beginner, intermediate and GM level. Within a video each opening is ranked in terms of its appropriateness vis-a-vis player skill level. Here is part 1 of the 3-part Tier List for Beginners...

Note that (particularly for the beginner openings tier list) they will frequently refer to some openings as "garbage" or "bad" (an unfortunate choice of terms in my view). This is not to say that these openings are inherently bad for all players.  These qualifiers are meant simply to convey how appropriate the specific opening is for the level of player being discussed, in terms of, for example, how much so-called "theory" (i.e., the collection of extensively documented variations) the opening encompasses, or how much emphasis the opening places on positional versus tactical skills in order to play it well.

So, an opening they refer to as "garbage" for a beginner may in fact be appropriate for higher rated players who typically know more of the theory for particular openings and have a more highly developed understanding of positional concepts. For each of the openings discussed be sure, also, to note whether the evaluation is from White’s or Black’s perspective.

Caro kann is a good easy opening for black with some teeth in it (look up what to do against the advance variation response to it too though, cause that's what they'll play most of the time at this level)

sleepingrainbows

I've been playing caro kann and queens gambit lately, though I should find something else aggressive for white cause they decline the gambit like 95% of the time

Stick to standard opening principles. At 900, any advantage gained in the opening is sure to be lost after a blunder. Also at this level, an opponent will frequently leave book, confusing you (us).

Myself, I am studying the Scotch, but opening principles usually lead me to variations of the Italian.

If you like playing the Italian as white, and you're looking for lots of attacking chances, you should learn the Evans Gambit.

MisterWindUpBird

You're playing a pretty good opening as black. KID is strong. Stick with it and improve. White? If you've put time into QG you're on a good thing. I used to play QG and swapped to London, but I'd like to get back to QG one day. No-one falls for the early traps, it's true, but it's a quality opening long term.

Nytemere

I play the King's gambit as white

SmallerCircles

If you like attacking and want a relatively straightforward opening that could fool some people into playing the wrong way, you could go with the Jobava-Rapport System. https://lichess.org/study/bsm8Az0F

JTorreslolz

For black I play the Pirc defense against e4 KID against d4 and for white with 1. E4 e5 I play the Vienna

MadMagister

Stick with the Italian for both white and black for 1.e4 and the KID playing against 1.d4. There are plenty of attacking opportunities in either opening and will lead to calculation-heavy games.

Tbh, it is how well you know an opening, not what opening, that matters more at the moment.

rakka2000

FOR WHITE I SUGGEST THAT YOU PLAY LOnDON SYSTEM.

AS BLACK SUGGEST THAT YOU PLAY STAFFORD GAMBIT OR ENGLUND GAMBIT.

ArjunNinjaX150

So btw I read everyone's response and most of you are saying to stick with what I am doing and improve with it (White-Italian and black-KID) and if I want to change it up, I can do the Sicilian with black and Vienna with white. Again Tysm on the great responses, I am clear now with my choices. grin.png

Ruy Lopez is very interesting to play too,  it can arise anytime tbh so it is helpful if you know it. The marshall attack is very fun to learn as well and the entire history of it.
