@Khalidm, why do you think I am referring to myself?

Why should e4 e5 be rule number one?

I thought you referred by yourself when you said this.

As someone who is not really a beginner, I still play e4 e5 all the time, for some reason.

If I had to chose a number one it would be either:

1. Get all your players in the field asap (develop, and get a higher rating in the long run).

Or

2. Hang less pieces and take more hanging pieces (if you want to get a higher rating in the short run).

Didn’t you read? He said Rule number one FOR beginners, not for players like you.

I think @AtaChess68 is absolutely correct.  Those are, in fact, two of the three biggest mistakes that beginners make: they hang pieces (or don't see their opponents' hung pieces) and they are completely unaware of how important it is to develop all your pieces.  (The third one is not understanding how important controlling the center is).

For a person rated, say, below 600 or so -- 1 d4 or 1 e4 is 100% irrelevant if they're not doing the above three things.

A better rule is

Dont worry about openings

alpha_zer000

The best rule is

Don't play

Do you know how to move pieces? If yes, then try to learn basic things about chess like controlling the center, how to play an opening , and learn tactics, and solve puzzles.

Study "Chess Fundamentals" Capablanca. As the author - then World Champion - asserted: there is everything you need and it will be good 100 years from then.

Solmyr1234

lol, you're the coolest ry.

GM Varu would beg to differ

but... maybe it's just him. maybe it's the "kids who insist of playing d4" class.. who knows.

This guy here is a master named Robert Ramirez. He has a youtube channel where he has about 118 videos of lessons from complete beginner to master. Start by looking at #1 etc but skip through until u reach the ones that u need. For example, no need to see a video on how to move the pieces of u know how to move the pieces. But try to watch all of them, just skip as needed. He explains IDEAS (that's important) very well.
