how do i prevent my opponent from taking the white starting the game?

I apologize on behalf of some people's rudeness here. You might be able to go into "custom game" and select the starting color. I've done it when practicing certain openings against the bots. I didn't see it for live play, but perhaps check on your end anyways. You could also abort games that you don't want to play. That's okay once or twice. But if you abort too many times you will get flagged.

To select play as white for live play you have to first select unrated. Then it will give that option. For rated games it will not allow you to select color as that would give you an advantage.
