I just wanted to post this because I am a little tired of beginners posting a “help me im new” thread and just getting slammed in the face by advertising for chess coaches. You don’t need to pay to get good at the game, so stop making it seem like you have to.

This. It's good to share your tips but any link for me is a no-go. Even if it's free, it's not like the same advice applies to all beginners.

Just find free chess books and study them. Not that hard.

At the same time, the amount of "help me" threads gets tiresome too. How about spending some time looking through the forum and searching for help instead of waiting for someone to tell you what to do?

If it's a titles player, then I would ask as they have a better understanding of how to improve

How about a little common sense? The creator of the thread just needs to state in his initial post whether or not he wants solicitations from coaches. If he states that he doesn't want this, and a coach posts a solicitation, then the OP just needs to report it.

And if it's not your thread, why should you care?

I have a chess coach. He helped me get to the level I’m at today. You suck at chess so I recommend you get a coach

Well, just because someone "sucks at chess" doesn't mean he should necessarily get a coach. There are other factors involved. Does the person want to get better? Does he think a coach would help significantly? Is that person willing and able to afford the price of the coach?

Maybe he didn't find the information that he needed, so he created a forum himself. That part was most likely not necessary.

So why did this turn into a debate about whether I need a coach?

Not really a debate. We had one ten-year-old who thought you should have one. I doubt that his critical thinking skills have fully developed yet.

Imagine a chess coach coming in this thread to advertise their coaching... that would be a big hump of irony

Yeah, it would. However, the original poster never actually stated that he didn't want any coaching solicitations in his thread... :-)
